Any current version 8 subscription or license will seamlessly carry over into version 9.

Most of the website has been updated but some things will filter in over the next few days like updated screenshots and videos.

Please note that if you were beta testing you will now need to acquire a retail key or use your previous version 8 key and re-install from the full release.

To upgrade directly from version 8 to version 9, run the upgrade program which can be found here.

This is the first release candidate for The Cleaner 9!

The database has been fully re-synched and optimized so you should re-install the program to make sure you are fully up to date.

If there are no major reported issues I hope to have the final full release available “real soon now”

Changes in this update include

• Removed registration prompts from installer.  They were too cumbersome and duplicated other functionality.
• Removed some interface sounds that were annoying.
• Removed the Basic View scan/update combination.  It will now use the same screens as regular scans and updates.
• Removed the slide-out update and report items prompts.  The Cleaner will now open on the highest priority page.
• Fixed some inconsistencies with the new registration system.
• Went back to the old-school “broom” icon.

There are some big changes in this update!

The trial version now requires a registration key to activate which has caused most of the registration code to be re-written.  We were getting killed with stolen/cracked copies using up bandwidth and resources.  The overload has been causing crashes and performance issues.  This change is to combat the resource drain and hopefully the process is as painless as possible.  This is all new code though so debugging has reset to square one.   Trial users will have a slightly lower service level.  Downloads will not be quite as fast as for to registered users.  This is required to unburden the server.   We have been approaching 4 terabytes / month in bandwidth and this will stop stolen/cracked copies from being able to get updates at all.

Updates have been consolidated into one process.  Instead of multiple downloads and checks for updates the updates are now centrally collected and packaged.  This will reduce traffic on the server.

Due to the changes is recommended that you completely uninstall and manually check that the installation folder has been removed.

Last Friday, the 12th, our site went down.  After talking with our data center people we were told the RAID (a bunch of hard drives acting as one large hard drive) was rebuilding.  This means the storage had a problem.

At this time I redirected to another server with a message about the site being down.

By Saturday the storage had still not been recovered and we were told it was being worked on.  Later that evening we were asked to provide our latest backup.  This was not a good sign.  The facility should have been making backups regularly but apparently they were not.  I uploaded our last backup and it was restored.  But not without problems.

I was able to get the key validation database up very quickly so The Cleaner will honor registered users and operate properly.  The malware signature database has been more of a problem.

In assessing the damage the online malware database was missing a large number of entries.  There are typically around 30K added per day.  Fortunately, there are multiple current backups of the database and it just took some time to merge them back in.  But now the version continuity is lost.  That means no individual program now knows where it is in the chain of updates.  This will require a large update to synchronize.  That will be available very soon.

The site once restored was missing a lot of links and had become unstable after the restore.

On the 16th and 17th we were working with the data center to resolve a number of problems that were being discovered.  I spent a lot of time trying to fix the web site.

On the 18th I exported the site data and wiped the whole thing.  Then I rebuilt it and imported all the pages and posts.

On the 19th, I have been finalizing and testing things but they are looking good.  The web site is up and running but will still needs some work.  The database is now complete and up to date and ready to receive new updates which will happen tomorrow or earlier barring any delays.  The “catch-up” update will be available shortly.

The malware database is once again live and you can do an update.  Unfortunately, this will be a very large download to catch up the database.  Sorry about that!
