How Does Microsoft Silverlight Work?

How Does Microsoft Silverlight Work?

Microsoft Silverlight enables displaying high definition videos and streaming them for everyone. This removes those content distribution networks and their fees. This is very beneficial for the small development agencies as it reduces their overhead cost and allows them more growth and the potential to become a large development agency. Although this is done for a nominal fee to Microsoft, it is still cheaper and more effective for all developers both big and small.

The applications will be delivered through a text-based language in browsers. This is called XAML. This is beneficial as most developers have to take greater measures to encode their content so that search engines and other Internet capabilities and crawl through the XAML code. Prior to Silverlight, developers spent a lot of extra time and money to wrap each file in a code that search engines could crawl so that they would be visible through a simple Internet search.

If you think about it, how many times do you search the Internet for information or a video on how to do something or search for a recipe? Many even search the Internet through search engines to find tv shows, movies, and music videos to watch. With Microsoft Silverlight, this has become easier for everyone. You will find more results in your search and the developer will not have to add so much code to be included in the search results. Microsoft Silverlight has opened up new doors for the ever growing Internet community.

So for all of the non-technologically sound people, let me tell you an easy way to understand what Silverlight is. I am sure that there has been many times that you have had that dreaded message pop up. Your flash player requires an update or is not installed. All you wanted to do was play a game or watch a video. Microsoft Silverlight is exactly that. It is Microsoft’s version of Adobe Flash Player. We use the Adobe flash player for many applications both online and offline. Many programs require a flash player. Now Microsoft is offering another alternative to those online applications. You will not be able to tell the difference between either flash player if you are technologically inclined. However, for the developer, they will notice the difference.

Since Microsoft Silverlight launched, there have been many applications that have come along to be bigger, better, and obtain more results. Android, Google, and Apple applications on our cellular phones have been introduced into the market. Silverlight has not been able to compete with the HTML5 application that the developers use for these applications and processes. It hasn’t just been Silverlight either. Adobe flash player has reached the same issues and faced the same walls. Unable to climb them, they have backed off of the market.

There are many sites that held out as long as they could and eventually converted to the HTML5 application. They were hoping that Silverlight would upgrade it’s technology so that they could continue with the development they already had.

There are even sites that do not automatically play flash content anymore. Examples of these are Apple Safari, Google Chrome, and Microsoft Edge. There are still many sites that utilize Microsoft Silverlight as their flash player. These sites actually experience difficulty running any type of streaming media. However, they have done their best to make do with the software they already have programmed.

Microsoft Silverlight was a great developmental tool. Had it continued to develop with the ever growing technological advancements of today, it could have continued to be a great developmental tool.
