Counter Strike is Valve’s multiplayer first-person shooter for Windows and Linux, with the current game delivered as Counter-Strike 2. Players compete in team modes built around objectives, using firearms, grenades and the routes through each map. Its competitive matches, smaller Rush battles and community content provide different ways to play within the same game.
Premier matches
Premier connects match play with a visible CS Rating and global or regional leaderboards. You can enter the queue alone or with friends. Before play begins, each team votes to select two maps; the game then randomly chooses one of those four selections for the match.
Rush
Rush puts two teams of three into a sequence of battle arenas. Each round gives the teams a limited budget and a limited amount of time to take control of a tower. Holding the tower when the opposing team is eliminated, or when time expires, wins the round.
Winning individual fights therefore serves a territory objective. Teams advance through the arenas toward the enemy castle, whose capture wins the match. Counter Strike randomly selects the battle arenas for each match. Rush wins are tracked on a friends leaderboard.
Counter-Strike 2’s reactive smoke
A smoke grenade changes what players can see through part of a map. In Counter-Strike 2, its cloud occupies three-dimensional space: smoke can spread through an open doorway or broken window, move along stairs and corridors, and merge with another cloud. Its shape follows the surrounding space, and its appearance responds to lighting.
Smoke also reacts during combat. Bullets and high-explosive grenades can disturb it, briefly opening a sightline or changing the area it obscures.
Weapon controls
Crosshair and scope settings let players adjust their aiming display, including the crosshair’s shape. Reloading also offers a timing choice: holding the reload key makes the reload silent, but takes longer to complete. Leaving a scoped view is silent as well.
Behind these actions, Counter-Strike 2 uses sub-tick updates to record when movement begins, a weapon fires or a grenade leaves the player’s hand. The server receives the timing of the action within an update interval, rather than treating every action in that interval as occurring together.
Map visuals and combat cues
Map changes range from lighting and material updates to complete rebuilds. Some familiar layouts retain their underlying structure while receiving clearer lighting and character visibility. Other maps use more extensive Source 2 reconstruction, so the changes extend beyond surface appearance.
Bullet impacts and directional blood effects give visual information about shots and hits. Reworked sounds reflect the surrounding environment and communicate events during play.
Prime Status
The base game is free to play. Prime Status is a separate paid account upgrade that matches its players with other Prime players and makes them eligible for Prime-exclusive souvenir items, item drops and weapon cases.
Workshop content
Counter Strike supports community-created maps, weapon finishes and stickers through its Workshop. Players can browse submissions, follow creators, provide feedback and rate work. Creators can build and submit content using guides and tools for those different asset types, with submissions considered for possible inclusion in the game.
Existing CS:GO inventory items carry into Counter-Strike 2. Legacy weapon finishes remain supported, while Source 2 lighting and materials change how items are rendered.
