Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool is an on-demand malware scanner for a computer that needs a focused inspection or cleanup. It runs as a separate utility instead of installing a permanent security service. A scan can inspect active memory, startup objects, boot sectors, ordinary files, and files stored inside archives. Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool can remove or isolate a detected object, but it does not stay active afterward to watch every new download or process. Running it once is therefore different from installing real-time antivirus protection.
Manual scans
Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool starts its work only when the user runs a scan. It has no scheduler. The standard scope targets areas that commonly hold active threats, and the scope can expand to chosen drives or folders before the scan begins. Selecting a small folder shortens the job, but it leaves memory, startup locations, and other unselected areas outside that particular check.
The scanner also opens supported archives and checks their contents. A detection inside an archive may identify one embedded file while the displayed outer path points to the archive that contains it. Removing the whole archive can therefore remove unrelated files stored beside the detection. The detailed object path deserves review before any destructive action.
Kaspersky recommends closing other programs first. Open applications can keep files in use and can also create new temporary data while the scan runs. The utility generates working files and a performance report during the session, so running it does more than read the selected files without leaving any local records.
Detection details
For each detected or probably infected object, Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool can show its location, detection name, threat level, and MD5 or SHA-256 hash. These fields help separate two files with similar names and show exactly where the scanner found the object.
The first results view does not show every event. It displays critical and important messages by default. Enabling Show informational messages reveals the scanned-file entries and less prominent events. A short visible list can therefore mean that a filter hides other events, not that the utility examined only those few objects.
Action differences
Skip leaves the object unchanged. Copy to quarantine creates an isolated copy but also leaves the original file in its existing location without modification. That action records the sample; it does not neutralize the original by itself. Delete takes a different path: Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool saves a quarantine copy and removes the original object.
Disinfect attempts to remove malicious content while retaining the usable part of the file. If disinfection fails, the utility saves a copy in quarantine and deletes the object. The combined Neutralize action follows an ordered sequence. It tries disinfection first, then attempts restoration from backup, and finally deletes the object if neither earlier step succeeds. Choosing Neutralize therefore authorizes a possible deletion rather than promising a repaired file.
Quarantine records
Quarantine stores objects in a form that prevents them from operating normally. The user can later restore or permanently delete a quarantined file. Restoring returns a file that the scanner already considered suspicious, so the detection details and hash should still match the intended object before it goes back into use.
Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool keeps reports and quarantine data in its working directory. Closing the main window does not turn that directory into ongoing protection, and downloading a newer copy later does not automatically rerun the earlier scope. A later check requires another manual launch and scan.
