Overview

Fan Control links temperature sensors to the physical fan channels exposed by a motherboard, graphics card, or supported controller. It reads temperatures and fan speed, then calculates an output percentage from a curve. That output changes how the hardware controller drives the fan. Fan Control does more than set one fixed speed, but it cannot create a control channel that the machine firmware or sensor library does not expose.

Map the hardware

The first-run setup searches for sensors and controls, then calibrates the fans it can change. A control card represents a writable channel; a speed sensor reports RPM. Several physical fans may share one channel, so three fans on a graphics card can appear as two controls when two of them use the same wiring.

Calibration tests a range of output values and records how the fan responds. Start and stop percentages matter because many fans need a stronger pulse to begin spinning than they need to keep spinning. A value below the stable range can produce repeated starts, stops, or rattling rather than quiet cooling.

Hardware detection depends on the libraries beneath Fan Control. Most desktop boards expose usable channels, while many laptops keep fan control inside proprietary firmware. Fan Control may install normally on an unsupported laptop and still show no fan controls. A model-specific plugin can add support only when that hardware exposes a usable interface.

Shape the curve

A curve turns a sensor value into a fan command. A graph curve lets the user place temperature and output points directly. Linear and trigger curves implement simpler relationships, while a mix combines curves with operations such as maximum, minimum, or average. A case fan can therefore follow whichever of CPU or GPU heat currently demands more airflow.

Response time and hysteresis stop short temperature spikes from making the fan surge every second. Hysteresis requires the temperature to move far enough before the output changes direction. A delay gives the reading time to settle. Excessive delay can also hold a low speed after a sustained load begins, so these settings need observation under real workloads.

Resolve competing control

Motherboard firmware can apply its own smart curve at the same time. The official setup guidance recommends giving the BIOS a fixed baseline instead of letting two independent curves compete. The selected PWM or DC mode must also match the connected fan. The wrong mode can make a channel ignore requested values or limit the usable range.

Graphics cards impose separate rules. Many Nvidia cards reject manual commands between zero and their minimum controllable percentage, yet they can stop their fans in the card’s own automatic mode. Fan Control has an override that returns the card to automatic control when the assigned curve reaches zero. The curve still needs to meet the temperature conditions that the card itself requires for zero RPM.

Combine external sensors

Plugins can add readings and controls from hardware utilities, liquid-cooling devices, or vendor interfaces. Fan Control loads compatible plugin files at startup and refreshes their values on its update cycle. A missing or failed plugin removes the data it supplied, which can leave a curve without its intended source.

Profiles save a complete arrangement of cards, curves, and assignments. Switching profiles can apply a quiet desktop setup or a higher-airflow workload setup without rebuilding every link. Automatic startup also needs cleanup before uninstalling the portable package; deleting the folder alone can leave its scheduled startup entry behind.
