AOMEI Partition Assistant changes how a physical disk is divided into volumes. It can resize or move partition boundaries, create and format volumes, migrate a Windows installation, copy disks, and convert selected disk structures. These operations alter the storage map that tells Windows where a volume begins, ends, and boots. They are different from moving files between folders: a wrong target can affect an entire partition before Windows can read its files. The program shows planned results first, but no partition change becomes permanent until the user applies the pending operation.
Read the disk map
The main window lists disks, partitions, drive letters, file systems, used space, and unallocated regions. AOMEI Partition Assistant bases the available actions on the selected object. Selecting a disk exposes different work than selecting its system partition or a block of unallocated space.
Model name, capacity, partition order, and drive letter should all agree before a destructive command starts. Drive letters can change between recovery environments, so capacity and partition position are safer identifiers than a letter alone. A current backup remains necessary because power loss or hardware failure can interrupt a boundary change.
Queue before applying
Most actions first create a preview. Resizing a volume changes the graphical boundary, and creating a partition adds a proposed entry to the map. AOMEI Partition Assistant places these steps in Pending Operations. Undo can remove a planned step before execution.
Selecting Apply opens the complete queue, and Proceed starts the real work. This separation prevents an accidental drag from changing the disk immediately, but it can also hide an earlier experiment in a longer queue. Review every pending item, not only the most recent command, because Apply can commit several changes together.
Make space adjacent
Extending a partition usually needs unallocated space in a usable position on the same disk. If another partition occupies that space, the user may shrink or move it first. Moving a boundary can require relocating a large amount of stored data even when the visible size change is small.
AOMEI Partition Assistant estimates execution time after the job is prepared. Closing other programs reduces open-file conflicts. System partitions, page-file volumes, the program’s installation partition, or volumes with running applications may force a restart into PreOS mode, where the change can happen before normal Windows services load.
Merge with limits
Merge Partitions combines supported neighboring areas under one target. Files from the absorbed data partition move into a folder on the destination rather than disappearing into the root without a trace. The operation does not allow every possible pair: adjacency, system-reserved areas, and boot-partition direction limit which volumes can merge.
The target also needs free working space. A nearly full volume can block the merge or leave too little room for the incoming data. Check that applications do not depend on the absorbed drive letter, because shortcuts, service paths, and backup jobs may still point to a letter that no longer exists afterward.
Migrate the system
The migration workflow copies the Windows system to another disk or partition and prepares the destination to boot. AOMEI Partition Assistant leaves the source installation in place. After the copy, the firmware boot order or the physical disk connection determines which Windows instance starts.
The destination must have enough space for the selected system data and a partition style that the target firmware can boot. A successful copy does not automatically make the computer choose it. Test the destination separately before erasing the source, and verify applications, activation, recovery partitions, and BitLocker state after the first start.
Check the result
When the operation finishes, compare the new capacity and partition order with the plan. Windows Disk Management can confirm that the expected volume is healthy and has the intended letter. A file-system check is appropriate after an interrupted or suspicious resize.
AOMEI Partition Assistant can prepare several related storage changes in one session, but each accepted change narrows the rollback path. Keeping the backup disconnected until the new disk layout and boot path are verified protects it from a mistaken format or wipe target.
