REAPER is a digital audio workstation for recording, editing, arranging, mixing, and exporting audio or MIDI projects. A session can hold a voice recording, a multitrack band, a podcast, a film soundtrack, or programmed instruments. REAPER keeps the editable project separate from the final listening file. Saving preserves the timeline and settings; rendering creates the WAV, FLAC, MP3, or other media file used outside the workstation.
Set the audio path
Recording starts with an audio device and a track input. The user chooses the interface in preferences, creates a track, assigns the microphone or instrument input, and arms that track. REAPER cannot record an input that the hardware does not expose, so the number of simultaneous sources depends on the connected interface.
Input monitoring sends the live signal through the project and back to the headphones. A large device buffer can create a noticeable delay between performance and sound. A smaller buffer reduces that delay but asks the computer to process audio more frequently. Test for clicks and dropouts before recording a full take.
Tracks carry anything
A REAPER track is not restricted to one fixed role. It can hold audio, MIDI, video, or a still image, and it can receive or send several channels. Folder tracks group child tracks and can also act as buses. This flexibility keeps the track list compact, but a route can become difficult to follow when sends and folders are added without clear names.
A muted source can still affect another track when routing choices say so. Check the routing window rather than assuming the visible vertical order describes the signal path. Feedback routing requires particular care because a signal that returns to an earlier point can create a loud loop.
Record takes and lanes
Loop recording can place repeated performances into takes or fixed lanes. The user then selects the preferred sections and builds a composite performance. REAPER keeps the underlying recordings available until the project is cleaned, so changing the active take does not automatically delete the alternatives.
Punch recording limits where new material replaces or overlays the timeline. Confirm the time selection and recording mode first. An incorrect mode can create another take when the intention was an overdub, or record beyond the visible punch range while only part of it appears active.
Freeze heavy tracks
Virtual instruments and effect chains can consume enough processing to interrupt playback. Freeze renders a chosen track to a mono, stereo, or multichannel audio item and removes its active effect workload. REAPER can later unfreeze the track and restore the editable items and effects.
The frozen audio reflects the routing and processing present at that moment. Change the source, send, or instrument only after unfreezing. Reverb tails and track-channel choices also affect what the frozen item contains, so listen beyond the final note before accepting the result.
Recover a bad project
A third-party plug-in can stop a project during opening. REAPER has a recovery path that opens the project with effects offline. The session can then load without running the suspected processor, letting the user remove, replace, or inspect it.
This does not repair a corrupt media file or missing recording. Keep project backups and use the option that copies media into the project directory when source files might later move. An RPP project refers to the audio it uses; it is not a container that always carries every original file.
Render the result
The render window decides the source region, output channels, sample rate, encoding, and file naming. REAPER can render the master mix, selected tracks, regions, or media items. The region render matrix can create several deliverables from one project, and the render queue stores jobs for later processing.
A successful render only confirms that a file was written. Open the result separately and check its beginning, ending, channel layout, peak level, and metadata. Keep the REAPER project when later mix changes may be needed, because a stereo export cannot separate the original tracks again.
