WinMTR is a free, open-source network diagnostic program for Windows that combines traceroute with repeated ping measurements. It shows the hops between your computer and a destination alongside their packet-loss and response-time statistics, so you can examine a connection along its route while the test continues.
Running a trace and setting probe options
Enter a hostname or IP address and start a trace. WinMTR builds a list of responding hops, identifying them by address or hostname where resolution is available. Each row represents a point along the route, with the destination at the end. Continued probing updates the measurements for those hops instead of leaving you with a single trace result.
The Options dialog controls ping size, the interval between probes and the maximum number of hops. Previously entered hosts remain in the host history for reuse, and Clear History removes that list. WinMTR also accepts a target host from the command line; its help argument displays the available command options.
Hop statistics
For each hop, WinMTR displays the number of packets sent and received and the percentage that did not produce a reply. Best, average and worst response times show the range of round-trip measurements in milliseconds. Reading these values across the route lets you compare where replies become slower or less consistent, while the packet counts show how many probes contributed to the results.
A missing reply does not always mean that a router has stopped forwarding traffic. Some routers ignore ICMP probes or give their replies lower priority. Loss on an intermediate row therefore needs to be read alongside the later hops and destination: a hop that answers inconsistently can still pass traffic onward.
Trace reports
WinMTR can copy its results to the clipboard or export them as text or HTML. These outputs preserve the route and its measurements for a support request or a saved diagnostic record.
