Easily plan your next destination or discover new locations near and far with the Google Maps download. With hundreds of millions of mapped places and businesses, this versatile map lets you explore virtually any place at any time – no matter where you’re at in the world.
Real-time traffic information gets you where you want to go faster, and up-to-the-minute transit information allows you to catch a train, bus or ride-share on time – every time. You’ll also get up-to-date re-routing information so you can easily avoid road closures, repairs and traffic accidents. If you don’t have access to an internet connection, Google Maps lets you conveniently navigate and search your area offline.
When you open Google Maps, a high-contrast, colorful map displays your area. Bright yellow highlights highways, white shows you general streets, green highlights parks, blue highlights bodies of water and grey showcases any buildings in the area. A blue dot will show you your current location if you’re using location services. If you need some guidance on getting around an unfamiliar area, Google Maps is an incredibly helpful tool.
An easy-to-use search bar is at the top of the screen, which lets you put in the name of any business, street, city or town. If you’re looking for a specific business or location, you can type in the name of the business and receive a list of locations nearby. You also get access to convenient icons that contain categories of frequently searched locations.
An often underappreciated but powerful tool within Google Maps is Google Street View. If you want to view the inside of a building to see its layout without leaving your current location, Street View gives you a 360-degree, panoramic view. Use it to look inside your favorite restaurants, tourist attractions or shops. Indoor maps also lets you easily navigate big venues and places like indoor stadiums, malls and airports.
Other advanced Google Maps features include Explore, which uses Google’s extensive collection of data to find the best spots to eat, the best places to hang out and the highest-rated places to visit if you’re not familiar with a specific area. You also have access to the Go tab, which stores your frequently-visited locations with current traffic conditions and estimated arrival times. You can also easily add your own business reviews, location photos and unmapped roads using the Contribute feature.
Once you’re ready to hit the road, just type in your destination using the search bar. Google Maps will use your current location to map out several routes for your trip. You can also add up to 10 other stops you’d like to make before you reach your destination. When you choose a route, Maps will provide estimated arrival times based on your mode of transportation (flying, driving, walking or even biking).
You can choose to use vocalized, step-by-step directions during your trip or keep things simple by using the Google Assistant to re-route yourself if you start to get lost. Once you arrive at your destination, Google Maps will provide recommendations on what to do and the best time to do it.
