AVG Clear is a free Windows utility from AVG, also known as AVG Remover or the AVG Uninstall Tool. It removes AVG AntiVirus Free and AVG Internet Security from a PC. It exists for cases where the normal uninstall through the Start menu, Settings or Control Panel does not finish. One example is when Windows reports that setup is already running.
Why AVG Clear works from Safe Mode
AVG Clear does its removal work in Safe Mode. There, Windows starts with only a minimal set of drivers and services instead of the full normal startup. The tool handles the switch itself. After the user launches it with administrator rights, it shows a “Reboot to safe mode” tile. Confirming the restart brings the PC back up in Safe Mode with AVG Clear ready to continue.
The tool has to be run as administrator, and Windows may ask for User Account Control approval before it opens.
Remove only or remove and reinstall
Once AVG Clear is running in Safe Mode, the user picks one of two actions:
- Remove only deletes the AVG AntiVirus files and leaves the PC without the product.
- Remove & Reinstall deletes the existing files first and then leads into a new installation of the AVG product. This suits a broken or corrupted setup that should be replaced rather than abandoned.
AVG’s steps for the tool do not include picking a product from a list or entering folder paths. The user confirms the choice with the Uninstall button. The tool then removes the files and asks for one more restart, which returns Windows to normal mode. If reinstallation was selected, the setup continues from there with on-screen prompts.
Subscriptions after AVG Remover
Running AVG Remover only affects the software on that computer. A paid AVG Internet Security subscription stays active after the tool removes the files. A user who wants to stop paying has to cancel the subscription separately.
Separate remover for AVG Secure Browser
AVG Clear is aimed at the antivirus products. AVG Secure Browser has its own uninstall utility. It follows the same pattern, with an administrator launch and a restart into Safe Mode, but adds one extra choice. Users can tick a checkbox to delete browsing data such as bookmarks and history along with the browser. Without that box ticked, only the browser program is removed. Users who need to clean up both the antivirus and the browser run the two tools separately.
