Software Description

Because employees at Google needed better ways to communicate, the company created Google Hangouts, a messaging and video calling service designed for its productivity tools. People could use this application on Android, iOS and web browsers and it allowed them to communicate with Gmail and Google+.

Users could use Google Hangouts to send texts, talk over the phone and hold video conferences. You could use the service to talk with one person or with a group of people at the same time. People liked that their Google accounts worked well with the app and they could read their messages from any device.

It was possible for up to 25 people to participate in group calls using Google Hangouts which worked well for both personal and business calls. Because of screen sharing, users could share documents, present presentations or work on projects together during video calls. The quality of calls was good no matter how fast or slow the internet was.

Photos, videos and animated GIFs could be shared using Google Hangouts’ text messaging feature. Messages could be found on all devices and switching between phones, tablets or computers would automatically update the conversations. It also displayed icons to show when messages were sent, received and opened.

It was very easy to start a Hangouts chat from Gmail, since Hangouts was closely connected to other Google services. Users could also link their accounts to Google Calendar which made it easy for them to join scheduled video meetings. It became easier for users who were already using Google products.

The app included location sharing, voice messages and emoji reactions which improved how messages were sent and received. People could arrange group chats, change the names of chats and set who can join or leave the chat. Android users were able to use the service to send and receive SMS messages which helped them manage all their messaging in one place.

Because Hangouts was browser-based, users could take part in conversations without downloading any software. The web version offered all the features such as video calls, screen sharing and a history of messages. Because of this flexibility, it worked well for chatting with friends and attending work meetings.

Google ended support for Hangouts and switched to Google Meet and Google Chat which meant Hangouts was no longer available in the company’s range of products.
