WinSnap captures Windows interface elements and keeps visual details that a rectangular screen crop often loses. It can isolate a window with its rounded corners, transparent title bar, and shadow, capture a fixed region, combine several interface objects, and add annotations before saving. WinSnap changes the screenshot image only. It does not alter the window, dialog, or document that appeared on screen.
Capture window edges
Window mode identifies a window as an object instead of asking the user to draw its boundary by hand. This lets WinSnap retain Windows styling around the edge, including Mica or Aero transparency and native shadows. The result can sit on a transparent background rather than carrying unrelated desktop pixels.
The small options menu beside Window mode controls the more specific capture behaviour. A borderless or unusually shaped window can still need a preview, because the operating system decides which visible pieces belong to that object. Tooltips and pop-up menus may also exist as separate objects.
Select several objects
Object mode can capture more than one window, dialog, menu, button, or other interface element. Holding Ctrl selects the objects that should appear together. Multi-region capture applies the same idea to manually drawn screen areas.
This differs from taking several independent screenshots and pasting them into an editor. WinSnap composes the selected material in one capture and keeps transparent space between separate objects. Selection order and overlapping windows still matter: an object hidden behind another cannot contribute pixels that were never visible.
Repeat one region
Region mode draws a rectangle over any screen area. Fixed Size keeps the output dimensions constant across repeated captures, which helps a sequence of instructions or comparison images line up. The fixed dimensions do not keep the content centred automatically; each capture still needs deliberate placement.
Full-screen mode records the complete display. On a multi-monitor arrangement, confirm which screen or combined desktop the command targets before exposing material from another monitor. Cropping after capture removes visible edges but cannot undo disclosure if the original file or clipboard copy was already shared.
Choose the shadow
WinSnap can retain the native window shadow or remove it and apply a custom one. Custom controls change colour, size, direction, and opacity. Presets make a repeated visual treatment easier to reproduce across several screenshots.
A large shadow adds transparent canvas around the object and changes the final image dimensions. This can break a layout that expects an exact width even though the captured window itself has not changed. Set the visual treatment before measuring or exporting an image series.
Annotate the image
Arrows, lines, shapes, text, and a spline pen can point to a control without opening a separate image editor. Pixelate can obscure a selected area, while colour and blur treatments draw attention to another region. These changes become part of the saved image.
Keep an unmarked original when labels or redaction may need revision. Pixelation hides readable detail at the chosen output size, but resizing or choosing too small a block can leave text recognizable. Inspect the exported file at full size rather than trusting only the editor preview.
Preserve transparency
WinSnap can save empty areas as transparent and retain partial transparency in shadows and reflections. Choose a format and destination that preserve an alpha channel. A format without transparency replaces those areas with a solid background.
Clipboard transparency also depends on the receiving program. The official workflow identifies supported Microsoft Office destinations, but another editor may paste a flat background. Save a transparent file when the alpha channel must survive beyond the current clipboard session.
