Corel PaintShop Pro edits photographs, scanned artwork, screenshots, and drawn graphics in a layer-based Windows workspace. It combines a photo organizer, a RAW-development area, and a detailed editor. A project can mix pixel layers with vector text or shapes, while the saved PaintShop image keeps those editable parts separate. Exporting to JPEG or PNG creates a delivery copy and usually flattens choices that the project file can still change.
Three work areas
The Manage workspace browses folders, ratings, tags, and catalogue records. Adjust handles quick corrections. Edit exposes selections, masks, layers, vector objects, retouching, and compositing controls. Opening a picture in the wrong area can make a command appear missing even though Corel PaintShop Pro supports it elsewhere.
The catalogue records where imported images live. If a file moves or changes name inside Corel PaintShop Pro, the database can follow that change. Moving the same file in File Explorer can leave the catalogue pointing at its former path. The image still exists, but a collection or search result may need its location repaired.
Layers decide behavior
Raster layers contain pixels. Vector layers hold editable text, lines, and shapes. Group layers organize several items, and a background layer follows stricter rules than an ordinary raster layer. The active layer type controls which commands can run. A paint brush cannot write directly onto a vector layer, and a vector object loses its editable path when converted to raster data.
The Layers palette controls stacking order, visibility, opacity, blend behavior, links, and groups. Linking two layers makes them move together without merging them. Merging reduces the layer count but also removes that separation. Saving a new project copy before a large merge leaves a route back to editable text and masks.
RAW stays separate
Camera RAW Lab interprets sensor data and stores development choices such as white balance, brightness, shadow detail, and saturation. The original RAW file remains read-only. To use the developed photograph in the main editor, Corel PaintShop Pro opens it as an image that must later be saved in another format.
This distinction prevents accidental replacement of the camera original, but it also creates two records: the source and the rendered result. A person who adjusts the RAW preview and closes without continuing to Edit may not have a normal JPEG ready to share. Batch RAW settings need checking across several lighting conditions before they apply to an entire shoot.
Selections and masks
A selection limits an operation to a temporary region. A mask controls layer visibility and remains editable with the project. Painting black or white on the mask changes what the layer reveals without deleting its pixels. Painting on the image layer instead changes the actual picture, so the highlighted thumbnail in the Layers palette matters before every brush stroke.
Selections can have feathered edges, which soften a cutout but can also create an unexpected halo. Viewing the result against both a light and dark temporary background reveals edge contamination that the checkerboard transparency view may hide.
Recorded edits
Scripts record many actions performed in the Edit workspace and replay them on another image or batch. This works well for a repeatable resize, border, watermark, or color step. Corel PaintShop Pro cannot record every operation. Workspace customization, CMYK profile creation or editing, Print Layout work, gradient creation, and actions outside the Edit tab fall outside the script recorder.
A script also repeats its coordinates and assumptions. An operation recorded on a landscape photograph can place a crop or object incorrectly on a portrait image. Testing the script on copies with different dimensions is safer than sending an unchecked batch directly over original files.
Saving the result
The PaintShop project format preserves layers and other editable data. JPEG suits a finished photograph but has no transparency and applies lossy compression. PNG retains transparency but does not preserve the full editable layer structure. Corel PaintShop Pro warns when the selected format cannot store the current project data; choosing Save As for the delivery copy avoids replacing the working file.
