VSDC Video Editor
Description
Flash-Integro LLC distributes VSDC Video Editor free, no watermark on exported video, no time limit. That combination — no cost, no watermark, no expiration — puts it in competition with the free tiers of Davinci Resolve and iMovie for users who need a capable editor on Windows without spending money. VSDC supports multi-track video editing, effects, transitions, green screen, color correction, and motion tracking, and covers the range of features that most content creators and small-scale video producers need. A paid Pro upgrade includes hardware acceleration, video stabilization, and mask tools for those who desire those particular additions.
The free version uses software encoding, which makes rendering slow on machines without capable GPUs compared to hardware-accelerated competitors. Users who find the rendering speed acceptable for their volume of output — occasional videos rather than daily production — get a full-featured editor for free.
VSDC’s timeline is a position-based approach in which clips, images, audio files, and effects are positioned at specific time positions on layers instead of the sequential approach most consumer editors use. Each object on the timeline has a beginning time and duration. This non-linear approach permits overlapping objects on the same layer, and precise placement of short clips between longer ones, at the expense of a steeper learning curve than the sequential track layouts in simpler editors.
The effects and filters library includes color adjustments, distortion effects, blurs, stylization filters, and transition effects between clips. Effects apply per object from the properties panel and layer with each other. The transitions list includes standard cuts, fades, and wipes as well as 3D transition effects. Each effect has parameter controls to adjust the strength and behavior of the effect.
VSDC has a color correction module with color wheels to adjust shadows, midtones, and highlights separately. Curves give you tonal control like the curves adjustment in Photoshop. Color filters apply LUT (Look-Up Table) files for applying cinematic color grades created in professional color grading tools. The free version offers these tools without the advanced scopes of VSDC Pro.
The chroma key effect is used to remove a solid color background from a clip. The key color is selected by clicking in the preview, and threshold sliders control how widely the removal extends from the selected color. Spill suppression minimizes the color cast that green or blue screen lighting creates on subjects at the edges. The keyed clip composes over another video or image placed on a lower layer.
Text objects insert as independent timeline elements with adjustable font, size, color, and position. Animated text effects are used to move text on and off the frame with fly-in, fade, and typewriter animations. Text follows motion path for effects where the title moves across the frame along a user drawn curve.
The motion tracking tool tracks a user-defined region over the timeline of a clip and produces tracking data. Effects, text overlays, and blur masks are attached to the tracked region and follow the object’s movement through the frame. Motion tracking is included in the free version, although accuracy is dependent on the contrast of the subject and the consistency of the motion.
The audio mixer displays the volume levels of all audio on the timeline, per track. Volume automation draws keyframe points that change volume at specific times. The audio spectrum visualizer creates an animated waveform or bar visualization from an audio track, rendering it as a video layer to be used in lyric videos and audio visualizations.
Export formats include MP4, MKV, AVI, MOV, WMV, etc. Resolution settings range from 480p to 4K depending on project settings. YouTube and Vimeo presets set the encoder settings that are recommended by those platforms. DVD project export creates VIDEO_TS folder structures for authoring. The free version is software encoding; VSDC Pro opens up GPU hardware encoding via Nvidia NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync.
