Advanced IP Scanner is a free network scanner for Windows from Famatech. It searches a local network for connected devices and shows each one’s IP and MAC address. You can open shared folders, web interfaces and remote sessions on those machines straight from the results. It can also run in portable mode without installation.
Choosing the address range to scan
A scan in Advanced IP Scanner covers whatever IP range you enter. The IP button on the toolbar fills in the range of the network your computer belongs to, based on its subnet mask. A second option builds a class C range. It keeps the first three parts of the address you typed and scans every address from .0 to .255.
After you click Scan, the program returns a list of the computers it found in that range. Because the scan records MAC addresses, the list also becomes the basis for waking those machines later.
Speed, accuracy and scanned resources
The Performance settings trade speed against reliability. A high-accuracy mode checks each computer several times, which takes longer but is less likely to miss a device. A slider sets how fast the scan runs, and with it how much load it puts on the processor and the network.
The Resources settings decide which services Advanced IP Scanner looks for on each device. Selecting fewer resources makes the scan finish sooner, so a quick device inventory can skip checks that a fuller survey would include.
Working with a device from the results
Right-clicking a device opens actions that hand the connection to other tools:
- Explore opens the computer in Windows Explorer, where you can browse its shared folders.
- HTTP and HTTPS open the device’s web interface in the browser you choose in settings or the default one.
- FTP opens the device over FTP in a browser or in an FTP client you specify.
- RDP starts a Windows Remote Desktop session with the selected computer.
- SSH and Telnet connect from the shortcut menu. SSH uses the client set in the program’s options. Telnet opens a terminal on the standard Telnet port unless a different client is configured.
- Ping and Tracert open a terminal that tests whether the device responds and shows the route packets take to reach it.
Radmin connections
When a scan finds Radmin Server running on a computer, Advanced IP Scanner can open a Radmin session with it directly from the results or the Favorites tab. This requires Radmin Viewer, which is free; the options let you point to a portable copy of the viewer instead of an installed one.
Remote shutdown and Wake-on-LAN
Advanced IP Scanner can send a shutdown command to remote computers you have permission to manage. The command can force the shutdown, restart the machine instead, or show a warning message to the person using it first. You can cancel a pending shutdown from the same menu before it takes effect.
Wake-on-LAN works in the opposite direction, sending a signal that powers on a sleeping or switched-off machine. It only works for computers whose MAC address the scan has already identified.
Favorites and saved device lists
You can add devices you return to often to a Favorites tab from the shortcut menu. You can then work with them without scanning the whole range again. You can save and reload the Favorites list later, though you can only load XML files back in.
You can save the contents of any tab as XML, HTML or CSV.
