Advanced Onion Router is a portable Windows proxy and process-interception client built around an older Tor network stack. It was designed to start a local proxy, build onion-routing circuits, and redirect selected application connections through those circuits. It also exposed circuit choices, proxy chains, identity controls, address bans, and browser-oriented filtering in one desktop interface.
Maintenance has stopped
The official project archive shows no release after 2017. That date is not a cosmetic detail for anonymity software. Tor directory authorities, relay protocols, cryptographic libraries, browser isolation methods, and network defenses continue to change. A client frozen around an old network stack may fail to connect or may lack protections that current Tor software assumes.
Advanced Onion Router should therefore not be treated as a current substitute for Tor Browser. Historical availability explains what the program did; it does not establish that the old binary is safe for sensitive browsing today. A supported Tor Project release is the appropriate starting point when anonymity matters.
Local proxy paths
The program listened for SOCKS and HTTP proxy traffic and could chain through another proxy, including some corporate proxy setups. An application with its own proxy settings could point to that local listener. The process interceptor attempted to redirect programs that did not expose a normal proxy option.
Interception does not make every protocol compatible with Tor. UDP traffic, direct DNS behavior, helper processes, browser plugins, and application-specific network code can behave outside the intended path. The configuration could block unsupported connections, but a user first had to identify which processes and child processes belonged to the application.
Browser isolation
The project documentation described preparing a separate portable browser and starting it under interception. That separate profile mattered because ordinary browser history, cookies, cache, plugins, saved accounts, and extensions can identify a person even when the visible IP address changes.
Changing the circuit or generating different request headers does not erase an account login or unique browser state. Visiting a personal account through one identity and an unrelated site through another can still link the activity at the service level. Network routing and browser identity are different layers.
Circuits and exits
Advanced Onion Router displayed relays and allowed manual circuit rules, country restrictions, node bans, and length changes. More relays do not automatically create better anonymity. Unusual circuit construction can reduce the set of comparable users or break the assumptions under which the network was designed.
Traffic leaving the final relay also needs application-layer encryption. An HTTPS connection remains encrypted toward the website, while plain HTTP becomes visible after leaving the onion route. Advanced Onion Router could filter headers, but it could not turn an unencrypted destination into an encrypted service.
Historical use only
The portable design kept settings beside the executable and could encrypt configuration files. That was convenient for its time, yet portability does not solve obsolete network code or an outdated browser base. Advanced Onion Router is best understood as an archived Windows experiment in exposing Tor controls and intercepting desktop processes, not as a maintained privacy tool for present-day credentials or confidential work.
