Avira Security Antivirus & VPN is an Android security app that combines malware scanning with tools for controlling access to apps, checking exposed email addresses and protecting internet connections. Its free edition includes the virus scanner, a limited-data VPN, app locking and device cleanup. A paid Security Pro upgrade adds web protection and microphone controls.
Malware scanning
Avira checks the Android device for malicious software, including viruses, spyware and adware. It can block threats and remove detected malware, with protection working in the background as the device is used. You can also run scans to look for an existing infection.
Network scanner
The network scanner shows the devices connected to the phone’s Wi-Fi network and checks them for vulnerabilities. You can use the connected-device view to identify equipment sharing that network.
Permissions review and AppLock
Privacy Advisor shows which apps request access to sensitive information. Its permissions dashboard brings these requests together, allowing you to review and manage app permissions from one place.
AppLock controls who can open selected applications on the phone. You choose sensitive apps, such as messaging tools, and protect them with a PIN. Someone using the device then needs that PIN to enter the protected app. Security Pro also adds controls over which applications can access the microphone.
Email exposure
Identity Protection checks whether an email address or associated account information has appeared in a data breach. Avira Security Antivirus & VPN can alert you to exposed email details.
Built-in VPN and its daily limit
The built-in VPN can be turned on from within Avira to secure online activity, including connections over public Wi-Fi. It also supports access through a different virtual location for sites with geographic restrictions.
The included VPN has a daily traffic allowance of 100 MB. Security Pro retains that limited allowance; unlimited VPN traffic belongs to VPN Pro or the Prime Mobile offering.
Web protection
Web Protection is a Security Pro function. It blocks access to malicious and phishing websites before they load, adding a check on the destination you are opening alongside the VPN’s connection protection.
Device cleanup
Avira’s cleanup tools remove clutter from device storage and stop background apps to release memory.
