McAfee Total Protection is a paid security subscription from McAfee for Windows PCs, Macs, Android phones and iPhones or iPads. It combines malware scanning with web and scam warnings, a VPN, a password manager and identity monitoring, all handled through one McAfee account. McAfee positions it as its basic device-and-identity package for individuals, below the broader McAfee+ plans.
Malware scanning on each device
The core of McAfee Total Protection is an antivirus engine that checks files against threats both with a cloud connection and offline. It works in three ways. Real-time scanning inspects files as they are opened and used. Scheduled scans run on a recurring timetable the user sets. Users can start on-demand scans at any time, for example a full scan of the whole drive. When a scan finds a virus, ransomware or other malware, McAfee quarantines or removes the item. McAfee states that detection combines behavioral analysis with machine learning so that it can react to new threats as well as known ones.
Subscriptions with auto-renewal turned on include a Virus Protection Pledge. The pledge provides a refund of the current term’s payment if McAfee cannot remove a virus. It does not cover damage the virus caused, so backups remain the user’s responsibility.
Firewall and network traffic
The firewall controls which network connections are allowed in and out of the computer. On a Mac, the firewall is customizable and keeps the user in control of traffic coming into and going out from the computer. McAfee’s Advanced Firewall also blocks connections to dangerous outbound destinations. This targets malware that tries to send personal data off the device while running in the background.
Warnings while browsing and messaging
Web protection, delivered through McAfee WebAdvisor, checks websites, links and downloads before they open. It blocks known malware and phishing pages if the user clicks a bad link by mistake. It also flags a mistyped web address and points to the intended site, and scans downloaded files for known risks.
Scam Detector extends this to messages. McAfee Total Protection raises automatic alerts for scams in text messages, email and video, and blocks risky links in them even after a click. Users can also submit a social media message, an email or a QR code for an on-demand check. A coverage control sets how strictly text messages are judged. Video scam detection is trained on English audio, so other languages give less reliable results, and the AI does not catch every scam.
Secure VPN
The VPN encrypts traffic with AES 256-bit encryption, which hides browsing on public Wi-Fi from others on the same network. It can switch on automatically when the device joins an unsecured network or stay on all the time. The user can choose from almost 50 server locations worldwide. On Windows, users turn it on from the Secure VPN tile in the McAfee app. In some regions, unlimited VPN use depends on keeping auto-renewal enabled. Without it, a monthly cap applies.
Passwords and identity monitoring
The password manager stores account logins behind one primary password and fills them in on websites. It also generates complex passwords when users create a new account. Saved and shared passwords are available on both PC and mobile under the same McAfee account.
Identity monitoring watches the dark web for personal details such as email addresses, phone numbers, bank and card numbers, government ID numbers and usernames. When a match turns up in breached data, the user gets an alert with guidance on securing the affected accounts. Depending on the plan and region, McAfee Total Protection also includes identity theft coverage with restoration help, and Personal Data Cleanup. Personal Data Cleanup finds data broker sites that list the user’s information and guides removal requests.
PC maintenance tools
Depending on the region, Windows editions of McAfee Total Protection include several extra tools:
- Vulnerability Scanner finds outdated applications and Windows components and installs their updates from one place.
- QuickClean deletes temporary files and cookies.
- File Shredder deletes chosen files permanently so they cannot be recovered.
- File Lock creates password-protected, encrypted drives for sensitive files.
- App Boost and Web Boost give more system resources to the app in use and pause auto-playing videos to save battery and bandwidth.
- A spam filter for Microsoft Outlook moves junk mail out of the inbox.
Protection Score and device plans
The McAfee app summarizes the account’s state in a Protection Score. It rises as users set up McAfee Total Protection on devices and follow recommendations, and when identity monitoring is active. It drops when the user’s information appears in a data breach.
McAfee sells subscriptions by device count, with packages for a single device, five devices and ten devices in some regions. Unlimited plans cover personal household devices only. The ten-device plan includes Safe Family parental controls for Windows, Android and iOS. These let parents set app and screen-time rules and see a child’s location. Feature availability differs between operating systems, so a phone does not receive every tool found on a Windows PC.
