ESET Smart Security Premium watches files as the computer opens, creates, or runs them, and it controls network connections through its own firewall. It also adds cloud analysis for unfamiliar files, protected browsing for financial sessions, encrypted storage, password handling, anti-theft controls, and website filtering. ESET Smart Security Premium does not replace backups or make every downloaded file safe by reputation alone. Its modules act at different points: the file scanner checks local objects, the firewall decides which connections can pass, and LiveGuard can send a suspicious sample to an isolated cloud system for analysis.
Files meet the cloud
Real-time protection scans files during ordinary use. ESET LiveGuard concentrates on a file that has not yet earned a clear reputation. With proactive protection active, ESET Smart Security Premium can stop that file from running while the cloud analysis continues. The user can manually unblock it, but that choice removes the waiting period before the verdict.
LiveGuard sends selected suspicious samples to ESET’s cloud sandbox. The submission settings control which file categories can leave the computer and how long the cloud retains them. This matters on machines that handle confidential documents or proprietary installers. Turning every submission category on gives the service more material to inspect; narrowing the scope keeps more files local but can reduce what the sandbox can examine.
Firewall modes matter
Automatic mode lets ordinary outbound connections proceed and blocks most unsolicited inbound traffic. It requires little intervention and still accepts custom rules. Interactive mode takes a different approach. When no existing rule matches a connection, ESET Smart Security Premium asks whether to allow or deny it and can save the answer as a new rule. A busy application can generate repeated prompts until the rule set settles.
Policy-based mode blocks every connection that lacks an explicit allow rule. That can suit a tightly controlled machine, but an incomplete policy can stop updates, local discovery, or an application login without an obvious program error. Learning mode creates rules from observed traffic. ESET says to use it only during initial configuration because leaving it active can teach the firewall to permit traffic that should not become a permanent rule.
Encrypted working space
Secure Data creates an encrypted virtual drive inside a file. After the user mounts it with the chosen password, it appears as a local disk. The mounted contents remain available to other users of that computer until logout or restart, so encryption at rest does not isolate files during an active session. Automatic decryption at Windows sign-in reduces password prompts but also ties access to that account session.
Removable-drive encryption has strict layout limits. Secure Data accepts an MBR device with one partition and a capacity no greater than two terabytes. It does not accept GPT removable drives or multi-partition layouts. ESET Endpoint Encryption also cannot share the same computer after Secure Data has been enabled. These constraints need checking before moving important files into the encrypted container.
Protected browser rules
Safe Banking and Browsing starts supported browsers in a protected mode and can guard browser memory, typed input, profile folders, and clipboard data. It depends on the LiveGrid reputation system, and protected browsing requires an HTTPS connection. A browser or extension outside the supported set does not gain the same protection merely because ESET Smart Security Premium runs on the computer.
Extension policy can limit the secured browser to essential extensions or allow all supported extensions. Changing that policy does not remove extensions that already exist, so an earlier installation still needs its own review. When enhanced data protection conflicts with a legitimate program or unpacked extension, the user must add the item to the browser protection allowlist rather than assuming the protected browser will identify the exception automatically.
