Evernote is a note-taking and organization application for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and the web. It keeps written notes, captured web content, documents and recordings in a searchable collection, with tasks and calendar links attached to the information they concern. A note can hold both reference material and the actions that follow from it.

Note editor

The editor combines formatted text with attachments such as images, PDFs, documents, video and audio. Tables can hold structured information, while code blocks, sketches and mathematical formulas provide other ways to express material within the same note. Attachment display options let users choose between a compact link, a title preview and a fuller preview.

Headings and collapsible sections divide longer notes into subjects. Users can drag blocks or sections to change their order, and a generated table of contents links to headings and updates as the note changes. Links between notes, together with backlinks, connect supporting material without requiring it to be copied into every related note.

Organizing and sharing notes

Evernote groups notes into notebooks and uses tags to give content additional labels for retrieval. Notes can also be shared with other people, including readers who do not use Evernote. Real-time editing and comments allow shared material to develop through contributions and discussion.

Web Clipper

Evernote Web Clipper is a browser extension that sends material from the web into an Evernote account. It can save articles, web pages and PDFs, or capture a screenshot of a whole page or selected area. Article capture removes distracting advertising and sidebars, while screenshot tools add highlights, text and annotations to identify the relevant parts.

Before storing a clipping, users can give it a title, apply tags and choose its notebook. A bookmark-style capture instead keeps the page URL, image and description.

Document scans

The mobile app captures paper documents and handwriting with a phone camera. Receipts, invoices, instructions and handwritten pages can therefore become part of the same collection as typed notes. Evernote’s recognition and search functions can locate words in handwritten notes and photographs, including images of whiteboards, so retrieval does not depend entirely on remembering the title assigned to an image.

Note search

Search works with note titles, tags, keywords and dates. Filters narrow the collection by characteristics such as when a note was written or its location, and frequently used searches can be saved for reuse. Suggestions while typing help locate matching content when a search term contains a typo.

Semantic Search adds a route based on describing the information being sought. Instead of supplying the exact wording of a note title, a user can describe its subject to surface related notes.

Tasks and calendar events

Tasks are inserted directly into notes and also appear in a dedicated Tasks view. The note retains the background material, while the central view gathers actions from across the collection. Users can view tasks by note, assignment or due date and apply filters to concentrate on a particular group.

Due dates, recurring schedules and reminders give tasks a time component. Assignment lets another person take responsibility for an action, with progress tracked through Evernote.

Calendar connections keep event details and meeting notes together. Creating a note from an event includes its details, and linking an existing note to an event makes the relevant discussion available alongside the schedule. Evernote can also prompt users to take notes before or after meetings. External calendar connections support Google and Microsoft calendars.

AI tools in Evernote

Evernote’s AI Assistant uses a chat interface to retrieve information, generate content and perform organization actions such as adding tags. AI Meeting Notes records conversations and produces transcripts and summaries, providing text that can be kept with the rest of a meeting’s material. AI Assistant has monthly and per-chat usage limits.

For existing text, AI Edit on desktop and web can rewrite passages, correct grammar, summarize content, translate it or adjust its tone. Mobile AI Cleanup reorganizes scattered note content. Individual AI features can be enabled or disabled in Settings.

Evernote saves notes online and synchronizes them across the devices allowed by the account’s plan.
