Google Sheets app is a spreadsheet editor for Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad. It lets you create worksheets, calculate with formulas and edit files shared with other people. The mobile app works with Google spreadsheets and Excel files, so the same document can hold entered figures, calculated results and charts for review on a phone or tablet.
Editing and formatting cells
A worksheet organizes information into cells that you can edit individually or select as a range. Google Sheets app includes text formatting, alignment, cell colors and borders, with wrapping for content that needs more than one line. Find and replace locates particular content and changes matching entries without searching through every row manually.
Formulas
Formulas turn those entries into calculations. You choose the cell that will contain the result, then enter a formula or select a function. References to other cells bring their values into the calculation; for example, a formula can subtract an expense cell from an income cell. On Android, the function picker groups functions into categories and displays a description while you build the expression, so you can check what the selected function expects.
Charts
Google Sheets app creates a chart from a selected range of cells. You can choose the chart type, change its title, legend and colors, then move or resize it within the sheet.
Data filters
Columns can be sorted alphabetically or numerically, while a filter hides rows that do not match the chosen values or conditions. Removing the filter reveals those rows again. The mobile app supports ordinary filters; creating and using filter views requires the desktop version.
Shared worksheets
Several people can edit the same spreadsheet at the same time. When sharing a file, you choose whether another person can view it, comment on it or change its contents.
Comments keep questions and replies attached to the spreadsheet. A reader can ask about an entry and an editor can respond within the file, rather than moving the discussion into a separate copy. With a work or school account, comments can also carry assigned action items that can be reassigned or marked as done.
Google Sheets app saves changes automatically as you work. Its core mobile editing tools are free; Google Workspace subscriptions add organizational services and business features.
Using Google Sheets app offline
Spreadsheets can be created, viewed and edited without an internet connection. You can make a particular file available offline or enable a setting that keeps recent files available. An Offline view lists the documents prepared for offline use.
Excel files and export formats
Both mobile editions open and edit Excel spreadsheets, but their format choices differ.
| Platform | Import | Export |
|---|---|---|
| Android | XLS, XLSX, XLSM, CSV, ODS, TSV | XLSX, ODS, PDF, HTML page in a ZIP archive, CSV and TSV (single sheet only) |
| iPhone and iPad | XLS, XLSX | XLSX, PDF |
A workbook’s ability to open also depends on the mobile device’s available memory and resources. A file that opens in a desktop browser may therefore be too demanding to open on the phone or tablet.
