Hyena is a Windows administration program for managing Active Directory, servers and workstations from a single console. It brings directory objects and remote computer resources into an Explorer-style interface, where an administrator can select an object, inspect its information and use its context menu to make changes. Its scope includes both individual maintenance tasks and changes applied across many accounts or computers.
How Hyena queries Active Directory
Hyena lets administrators browse a directory through its organizational units or through object classes such as users, groups and computers. Queries determine which attributes appear in the results, so a user view can show employee identifiers and logon information while a computer view presents different properties. Predefined queries provide starting points, and custom queries can include LDAP filters to narrow the objects returned by the server.
Those query results also establish the working data for other operations. Instead of opening each object’s properties separately, an administrator can select a set of results for editing or export.
Bulk changes
The Active Editor turns an Active Directory query into an editable grid. Rows represent objects and columns represent attributes. Selecting a cell reveals the attribute’s data type and length restrictions, while attributes that cannot be changed are marked accordingly. Find and Replace and text case controls support repeated corrections across the grid.
Hyena marks modified cells and counts unsaved changes and affected objects before the administrator commits them. Delimited text files can also supply changes to the editor.
Active Task imports
Active Task handles imports that need to create objects as well as update them. It reads delimited input, including CSV files, and can use a unique directory attribute as the matching key for existing objects. Text, numeric, true/false and multivalued attributes are supported, alongside operations such as group updates and user-photo imports.
Before applying an Active Task, Hyena validates the input against directory rules, including attribute length limits. Settings are saved for repeated runs, with logging available to record execution. A user-creation task can also apply password options and create home directories with security settings, keeping related provisioning operations within the same task.
User accounts and group membership
User and group views are configurable rather than limited to a fixed collection of account fields. Hyena can display custom directory attributes and last-logon information, and administrators can reach accounts through a domain, an organizational unit, a group or a filter.
The Group Member Matrix shows membership across one or more groups. Membership views can include indirect members reached through nested groups, and the displayed attributes can be chosen to identify those accounts. Home-directory templates address a separate account-management task: they can create a user’s directory, optionally share it and set the share and NTFS permissions.
Remote computer management
Computers can be organized by domain, workgroup or custom group, or accessed individually by address. A remote computer’s properties expose information such as installed software, memory, BIOS details, network settings and hotfixes. Custom performance-counter queries provide views of areas including processes, memory, disks and network activity.
Hyena’s service controls work across selected computers. Administrators can inspect dependencies, start or restart services, alter startup settings and change service logon accounts and passwords. Service installation and removal are available alongside device-driver information and service recovery settings.
Other computer actions include shutdown, reboot and Wake-on-LAN. Session and open-file views identify active connections and resources in use, while remote registry tools support browsing, searching and editing keys and values.
Event logs
Hyena can combine event logs from several servers or workstations, or open previously saved event backup files, including EVTX logs. Filters narrow the display by time range, event identifier, source, description and other event properties. Columns can be sorted, and filter settings can be saved for later use. Log backup and clearing are available from the same administration area.
Scheduled tasks
The task view gathers scheduled jobs from multiple computers and provides access to their properties, triggers and actions. Administrators can add, change or remove jobs. For newer Windows Task Scheduler tasks, Hyena also supports folder navigation, viewing running tasks, starting or terminating them on demand, and importing or exporting task definitions.
File shares
Remote file operations use the Windows shell for copying, moving and deleting files and directories. Share administration adds controls to create or modify shares, adjust permissions, view connections and copy share definitions between computers. Open-file views can identify who has a particular file open.
Disk-space views collect capacity information across several machines without installing server agents for that function. The resulting view can be exported for further analysis or reporting.
Print queues
Hyena displays printers installed on remote computers, including printers that are not shared, as well as Active Directory printer objects. A combined job view can refresh automatically to show work from more than one printer. Administrators can pause, resume, restart or cancel jobs, control an entire queue and modify printer properties. Printer information can also be copied from one computer to another.
WMI inventory
Windows Management Instrumentation queries extend the information available about managed computers. Hyena includes predefined queries and a graphical query builder for choosing other WMI data. Queries can run against one computer or a selected set, returning information such as hardware models, processor details, installed applications, updates and network configuration.
WMI results are also actionable. Hyena can invoke methods on the returned objects, for example to terminate a process, renew a DHCP lease or uninstall an application. Both query and method execution can be logged.
Exporting data from Hyena
Directory results, inventory and other administrative views can leave Hyena as data rather than screenshots. Selected information can be copied to the clipboard, sent to Microsoft Excel or written to a file. WMI results also support Access export, and integration with the included Exporter Pro passes selected objects into its exporting workflow.
Exchange mailboxes
For supported on-premises Exchange servers, Hyena uses PowerShell integration to bring mailbox tasks into the same console as account administration. These include creating or removing mailboxes, mail-enabling distribution groups and changing addresses, aliases, delivery restrictions, storage quotas and retention settings.
Mailbox templates can specify a database and retention policy, and mailbox creation or removal can accompany user-account changes. The available operations depend on the Exchange generation; older Exchange installations may provide mailbox-property management without the same mailbox-creation capabilities.
Administrator licensing
Hyena is commercial software, with a fully functional trial. Its Enterprise Edition is licensed to each administrator who uses it, rather than by the number of managed users, domains or servers. A registered license permits continued use of the registered version; it is not a shared concurrent-use license.
