LibreWolf is a Firefox-based browser with project-maintained privacy defaults. The project publishes patches and bundles request filtering. It loads ordinary websites through Firefox technology while changing telemetry, cookie cleanup, fingerprinting surfaces and several optional web capabilities. LibreWolf is not Tor Browser, and its maintainers direct Tor anonymity use to Tor Browser instead.
The default configuration disables telemetry, crash reports, studies and personalized recommendations. It includes uBlock Origin, strict Tracking Protection, Total Cookie Protection and Resist Fingerprinting. LibreWolf also deletes cookies and site data on close unless the user creates the required exceptions.
A privacy default can break a real site
Canvas access can expose fingerprinting information, so LibreWolf asks per site under its protection model. Refusing the request can produce striped images where a site expected canvas output. WebGL remains off by default. A web map or browser game may need a site-specific allowance. A browser-based image editor can depend on it too.
Video conferencing can depend on WebGL and autoplay. A separate canvas permission can also affect page output. Enabling only one required capability may leave the meeting page partly broken. DRM playback follows another switch and a per-site permission, before supported commercial media can play.
The browser does not install its own updates
LibreWolf has no built-in automatic update process. The selected package manager or installer workflow must apply each new package. Leaving an update waiting means that the browser can remain behind upstream security fixes even while normal browsing continues.
Extensions can add security risk and make the browser fingerprint more distinctive. A privacy-focused default can lose part of its purpose when each installation gains a rare collection of add-ons.
Overrides apply across profiles at every start
librewolf.overrides.cfg changes documented preferences for all profiles that read the installation. LibreWolf loads it at each startup. When the same preference appears more than once, the last entry wins.
A stale line can therefore undo an earlier intended value, and a malformed or unsuitable override can break sites until the user removes it. The file does not create one isolated experiment for the current profile. WebGL prompts, Sync, letterboxing and referrer behavior can all change through documented overrides.
Autoscroll creates a smaller conflict: enabling it while middle-click paste remains active can paste clipboard data accidentally. One preference may change how another input action behaves.
Display language and reported language can differ
LibreWolf reports en-US to websites as part of its fingerprinting resistance. Changing the visible browser language does not necessarily change that content-language signal. A localized menu can therefore coexist with English website results until the relevant behavior changes through an override.
Firefox Sync starts disabled. When enabled, it encrypts data locally before transmission, but synchronized settings can still carry an unintended preference change to another LibreWolf installation. The synchronized setting can therefore apply the same unintended change on another installation.
Tor needs Tor Browser’s complete model
LibreWolf’s privacy defaults reduce several browser data flows. They do not reproduce Tor Browser’s anonymity design, and the maintainers advise against combining LibreWolf with Tor. Using it as a substitute can create a distinctive browser configuration on the Tor network rather than blending into the expected Tor Browser population.
The default download behavior also asks for user interaction after each file. A user can enable the standard download directory in Files and Applications. That choice changes where downloads go; it does not change the site’s tracking or content permissions.
