NXPowerLite Desktop is an offline file compression program for Windows and macOS. It reduces the size of PDF files, PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, Excel workbooks and JPEG, PNG and TIFF images by optimizing their contents. The resulting files retain their original formats and extensions, so recipients can open them in their usual applications without NXPowerLite. Processing takes place on the computer without uploading the files.
Image compression
Large pictures inside a presentation or document can contain more detail than its intended display needs. NXPowerLite Desktop can reduce those images to a chosen display resolution and recompress JPEG content at a selected quality level. An additional control allows suitable embedded images to be converted to JPEG.
The Basic, Balanced and Strong compression profiles provide different combinations of image resolution and quality settings. Strong compression gives greater priority to reducing size, while Basic keeps more image detail for uses such as printing or viewing on higher-resolution screens. Custom profiles let users save their own choices under a name and select them again for later jobs.
Standalone JPEG files have a separate resizing distinction: the standard profiles recompress them without changing their dimensions. Resizing can be enabled in a custom profile. JPEG metadata can also be removed while retaining the orientation information. For PNG images, NXPowerLite reduces the number of colors where appropriate; this is a lossy operation that can reduce the data needed to represent the image.
Cropped areas, embedded objects and charts
Microsoft Office files can carry editing material that is no longer visible in the finished document. NXPowerLite can discard the hidden portions of cropped pictures, storing only the visible area. Those removed portions can no longer be recovered by adjusting the crop.
Its embedded-object setting can also convert supported objects into pictures, which removes the ability to open and edit the original object by double-clicking it. Users who need that editing behavior can disable flattening in a custom profile.
Charts in PowerPoint and Word may contain an embedded Excel workbook as well as the data needed to draw the chart. A separate option removes that workbook while keeping the chart’s data points editable. PowerPoint users can choose whether images on slide masters are included in image optimization. On Windows, Excel processing can also clean excessive formatting from blank cells without changing the workbook’s data.
PDF resources
For PDFs, NXPowerLite combines image optimization with changes to resources stored alongside the page content. Font subsetting keeps only the characters actually used in the document instead of carrying an entire embedded font. Another setting removes private application data that a PDF creator stored for its own editing purposes and that is unnecessary for displaying the pages.
The compression profile determines which operations NXPowerLite applies; the PDF remains a PDF afterward.
File size audit
The file size audit examines Microsoft Office and PDF files to show which kinds of content occupy space and which may be preventing further compression. A PowerPoint breakdown, for example, can distinguish images, fonts, videos and embedded objects. This lets the user identify the content contributing to a large file instead of repeatedly applying stronger image settings to a presentation whose size comes mainly from another resource.
How NXPowerLite Desktop handles batches
Users can add files to the NXPowerLite Desktop window or drag them into its list, then choose a profile and a save mode for the batch. The default mode creates optimized copies. Other choices back up and replace the originals, or replace them directly without a backup. The destination for copies or backups is configurable, and the results screen shows the reduction achieved for the processed files.
Explorer integration on Windows and Finder integration on macOS provide compression commands from the file manager’s context menu. The Windows edition can also collect output into a ZIP archive when a single package is preferable to separate files.
The paid perpetual license supports batches of up to 10,000 files. The 14-day trial limits each batch to 20 files. Licensing is per user, with use on up to three computers, and covers the corresponding Windows and Mac editions.
Outlook attachments
On Windows, NXPowerLite integrates with locally installed classic Outlook to compress supported attachments as a message is sent. A ribbon control turns this processing off or back on, and its setting also applies to subsequent messages. Recipients receive the optimized files in their normal formats.
The inbox context menu can compress attachments already stored in an individual email. This integration does not work in web-based Outlook or the New Outlook app, and the macOS edition does not provide automatic email attachment processing.
