Overview

Panda Dome Essential is the entry-level paid plan in Panda Security’s Panda Dome line for home users. It builds on the free Panda antivirus by adding network-level protection: a two-way firewall, Wi-Fi monitoring and anti-phishing for web browsing and online shopping. A subscription covers Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices. Several of its tools, including the firewall and Wi-Fi checks, run only on Windows PCs.

Where Essential sits in the Panda Dome range

Panda Dome comes in Free, Essential, Advanced, Complete and Premium plans. Essential keeps the main protection of the free product and adds components that handle traffic and networks rather than files.

Component Essential Higher plans
Antivirus, firewall, Wi-Fi protection, safe browsing Included Included in all
VPN 150 MB per day, location selectable Same limit in Advanced and Complete; unlimited in Premium
Anti-ransomware and parental control Not included From Advanced
Password manager, PC cleanup, file encryption and shredding Not included From Complete
Automatic patching, Dark Web Monitor, premium support Not included Premium only

Essential is sold for 1, 3, 5 or 10 devices, or an unlimited number for household use, on one- to three-year terms.

Real-time scanning of files and processes

The core of Panda Dome Essential is a resident antivirus that checks files and processes as they open and run. The antivirus compares files against a signature database of known malware. Heuristic checks look for suspicious behavior from programs that have no signature yet. Panda’s Collective Intelligence system works both on the device and in the cloud. Behavior-based rules plus anti-exploit technology watch for dangerous actions from running software.

Anything flagged goes to quarantine. From there, users can delete it or restore it if it turns out to be a harmless file caught by mistake.

Manual scans come in three forms: a scan of critical areas such as memory processes and cookies, a full scan of the whole computer, and a custom scan of chosen folders. Any of these can be scheduled to run daily, weekly or monthly.

Firewall for Windows traffic

Essential’s firewall stands between the PC and the internet and filters traffic in both directions. It is configured automatically when switched on and blocks all unsolicited incoming connections by default. It applies stricter behavior on public networks and allows broader access on private ones.

Users who want finer control can edit the predefined rules in the advanced settings, including rules that allow or deny internet access to specific applications. The firewall also detects intrusion attempts such as port scans and brute-force attacks and can block the attacking IP address.

Checking the Wi-Fi network

When a Windows PC joins a wireless network, Panda Dome Essential runs a security check. Panda Dome Essential marks known, secure networks as trusted, and unknown or unsafe ones trigger a warning. For a home network, Essential lists every device currently connected, so an unfamiliar phone or computer stands out. It keeps a history of devices that connected during a given period even after they leave. It also alerts the user to hacking or unauthorized access attempts.

Phishing and malicious websites

Safe browsing is available on Windows and Mac. It checks visited sites against a cloud-updated database of known fraudulent and phishing pages. It also flags sites that imitate legitimate ones. When Panda Dome judges a page dangerous, it shows a warning in the browser. In many cases, it also blocks the page so users do not enter login or card details on it. Panda Dome blocks servers known to host malware the same way, and users can keep their own lists of allowed and blocked sites.

The daily VPN allowance

Panda Dome Essential includes Panda’s VPN with a limit of 150 MB of traffic per day. It encrypts the connection with AES-256 and replaces the device’s IP address with that of a VPN server. This hides the user’s location and makes tracking harder. Unlike the free plan, which always connects to the nearest server, Essential lets the user choose the server location. The VPN can turn on automatically on unsecured networks. Unlimited VPN traffic requires Premium.

USB drives and recovery

On Windows, Essential alerts the user when a USB drive is connected and offers to scan it. It also stops malware that tries to launch itself automatically from the drive. For a PC that is already badly infected, the rescue kit can run a deep scan. It can also create a bootable USB drive that cleans a computer that will not start normally.

Gaming mode and breach checks

The gaming/multimedia mode on Windows silences pop-ups, update prompts and background notifications while a game or video is running. It also reduces background processing and gives the game or media application priority for processor, memory and graphics resources.

Panda Dome Essential also includes the Dark Web Scanner, which users access through a My Panda account. The user enters an email address to find out whether information linked to it has appeared in leaked data. It runs as an on-demand check; continuous breach monitoring with email alerts belongs to the Dark Web Monitor in Panda Dome Premium.
