SoftMaker Office is a collection of three editors: TextMaker for written documents, PlanMaker for spreadsheets and Presentations for slide decks. They open and save the Microsoft document formats used for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, so a file can remain in DOCX, XLSX or PPTX during ordinary editing. SoftMaker Office also handles its own document formats and several exchange formats. It changes the contents and layout of office documents; it is not a cloud storage service or a replacement for keeping backup copies.
Three separate editors
TextMaker handles letters, reports and long documents. Its document tools include styles, master pages, change tracking, comments, footnotes, indexes and mail merge. It can create PDF and PDF/A files, produce fillable PDF forms and export a document as EPUB. PlanMaker works with formulas, worksheets, charts and external references. Presentations arranges slides, notes, animations and presenter output, and it can export a deck as PDF, images, HTML or video.
SoftMaker Office keeps these jobs in separate programs. A chart placed in a report begins in a spreadsheet context, while a slide deck has its own master and animation rules. Opening the wrong editor is not harmful, but it does not turn one file type into another. Conversion happens through Save as or an export command, and the target format determines what survives.
Formats have edges
The Microsoft formats are normal working choices rather than a one-way import route. This reduces conversion steps when documents move between SoftMaker Office and Microsoft Office. TextMaker can also open and save OpenDocument, RTF, HTML and plain text, while PlanMaker and Presentations have their own supported lists.
Compatibility is not the same as identical internal behavior. The TextMaker manual warns that another format may not understand every TextMaker function. A document saved to Word format can lose a formatting option or another function that has no matching representation. Plain text removes all objects and formatting. A document with unusual layout, fields or drawings should therefore be checked after saving in the exchange format, not only before it.
SoftMaker Office can keep earlier manually or automatically saved file states through version management. That can recover a previous edit, but it does not protect a drive that fails or a folder that is deleted. An independent backup still needs another location.
Protection needs a choice
TextMaker separates read protection from write protection. A write password allows someone without it to open the file as read-only, but blocks saving even under another name. A read password encrypts the file and blocks opening without the password. A third arrangement asks for both, giving read-only or full access according to which passwords the user enters.
A forgotten password has no recovery path inside TextMaker. The manual explicitly warns that the document can no longer be opened or saved. Encryption also presents a compatibility decision for Word files. The most secure method uses newer encryption that some older Microsoft Office releases may not read. The compatible method reaches those older releases but uses older encryption. The correct choice depends on the recipients, so password protection should be tested on their oldest required editor before the original unprotected copy is removed.
Finalizing removes history
Tracked changes, comments and summary fields can carry names, dates and editing history into a shared document. TextMaker’s Finalize command can remove the document summary, anonymize revision participants, accept all tracked changes or remove all comments. It can also strip the time attached to revisions or comments.
Some actions are irreversible. Accepting every tracked change erases the earlier wording from the revision view, while removing comments deletes their discussion. SoftMaker Office recommends running Finalize on a backup copy rather than the working original. Hiding changes from print output is a different action and does not remove them from the file.
Portable does not mean synced
SoftMaker Office can be installed on a USB drive for use on another compatible computer. This carries the editors and their local setup without requiring a normal installation on each machine. It does not automatically synchronize the documents stored elsewhere, and removing the drive during a save can damage the current file. Portable use still needs a deliberate document location and a safe-eject routine.
