Overview

Adobe Dimension is a 3D scene design and rendering application for Windows and macOS. It combines models, surface artwork, materials and lighting to create product mockups, packaging visualizations and illustrations. A designer can place a label on a container, arrange the container in a scene and produce images from different viewpoints using the same project.

Model composition

Scenes can use imported models, ready-made assets and customizable basic shapes. Dimension accepts common model formats including OBJ, FBX and GLB, allowing geometry created elsewhere to become part of a composition. Transform controls position, rotate and scale objects, while alignment, distribution and snapping help arrange several objects relative to one another.

The geometry and its appearance remain separate parts of the design. A model supplies the shape of an object; materials define how its surface responds to light, and placed images add artwork. This separation lets a packaging mockup retain its shape while the label or surface finish changes.

Surface artwork and materials

Dragging an image onto a model creates an image layer over its material. Adobe Dimension provides two placement methods for different kinds of artwork. Decal mode places an isolated graphic on the surface, such as a logo or sticker. Fill mode follows the model’s UV layout, the coordinates that map a flat image onto its 3D surface, and suits prepared texture artwork or repeating patterns.

A selected graphic can be moved, rotated and scaled directly on the model. Each image layer also has opacity, roughness and metallic settings, so the artwork’s surface appearance can differ from the underlying object. For example, a metallic label can be treated separately from the material of the package carrying it.

Materials control the broader finish through properties such as color and roughness, with image textures able to vary values across a surface. Materials reused across objects can share edits; unlinking a material allows an individual object to change independently.

3D text

Adobe Dimension generates dimensional text from fonts installed on the computer. The text remains editable, with controls for font style, character spacing, line spacing and extrusion depth. Bevel settings shape the edges into treatments such as rounded profiles or outlines, changing how the lettering catches light.

The front, back, sides and bevels have separate material regions. A word can therefore have a different face finish from its edges without importing separate letter models. These regions persist when the text or bevel settings change, allowing the typography to be revised within the scene.

Photo matching

A background photograph can place the 3D composition in an existing setting. Match Image analyzes the photograph and adjusts the scene’s lighting and camera perspective to suit it. It can also resize the canvas to the image’s proportions or pixel dimensions.

Lighting options distinguish outdoor sunlight, multiple light sources and abstract backgrounds. Dimension builds environment lighting from the photograph to provide ambient light and reflections, then adds lighting appropriate to the selected option. The result remains adjustable. Automatic perspective matching requires enough perspective information in the photograph, so it is unavailable for images where that information cannot be detected.

Camera views

Camera controls determine the viewing angle, framing and focus of the image. Focal length changes the field of view, while depth of field keeps a chosen area sharp and blurs areas outside it. The focus point and blur amount let the camera emphasize one part of a product arrangement.

Dimension can retain different perspectives of the same scene for rendering. This allows a front view, an angled view and a detail composition to use the same objects, artwork and materials without rebuilding the scene for each image.

How Adobe Dimension renders and exports images

Rendering turns the assembled models, materials and lights into a flat image. Preview rendering supports composition work, while ray tracing calculates light interactions that contribute to shadows, reflections and translucency. Render settings control the balance between processing speed and image quality.

Adobe Dimension exports rendered images as PNG or layered PSD files. PNG supplies an image for use in other layouts, while PSD retains layers for further image editing. Saving the native DN project preserves the scene for later changes, including its decals and materials, rather than keeping only the finished picture.
