Overview

Aiseesoft Blu-ray Player is a media player for Windows and macOS. It plays Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray folders and ISO images, DVDs, and ordinary video and audio files on a computer. It is a paid program sold under lifetime, monthly and multi-user licenses, with a free download offered from the developer.

Discs, folders and ISO images

The main screen provides Open Disc and Open File buttons. Open Folder also loads a Blu-ray folder. A physical Blu-ray needs a Blu-ray drive connected to the computer. Once you insert the disc, Open Disc reads it and Aiseesoft Blu-ray Player shows the disc menu. A Blu-ray folder copied to a hard drive (the BDMV structure) is opened from local storage in the same way, without the original disc.

ISO images are handled through a virtual drive. You first mount the image with a separate virtual-drive tool. The player then opens that virtual drive as if it were a real disc. The same applies to DVD ISO files. The developer states that commercial Blu-ray discs from any region can be played.

Loading a protected Blu-ray or DVD requires an internet connection. Aiseesoft Blu-ray Player contacts the developer’s servers during decryption. This means a disc that another user has already decrypted does not have to go through the full process again. Once a Blu-ray has loaded, playback itself continues without the connection.

Disc menu and title selection

After a disc or folder loads, a menu appears with options for Play Movie, Chapter, Audio, Subtitle and Other Titles. Play Movie starts the main feature directly. Before playback begins, the other entries let the viewer pick a specific chapter, an audio language, a subtitle track or a secondary title such as bonus material. DVDs follow their own main menu.

During playback, right-clicking the video opens a control panel for playing or stopping the movie, jumping to another title or chapter and changing the player size without returning to the disc menu.

Video files and formats

Beyond discs, Aiseesoft Blu-ray Player works as a general player for local media. Open File loads a video and playback starts automatically. Supported video formats include MP4, H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, MKV, AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, F4V, M4V, VOB, MPG, 3GP, RM and RMVB. They also include camcorder and broadcast formats such as MTS, M2TS, TS and MXF. Blu-ray content plays at 1080p and 720p. The player can play common video files at up to 4K resolution, including 4K files in MP4, HEVC, MKV, MOV and WebM.

The Mac version lists SD resolutions as well as 1080i, and adds an upscaling effect intended to sharpen lower-resolution high-definition video on larger screens.

Surround and lossless audio

The player supports Blu-ray soundtracks in DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD. The Mac version lists Dolby Digital and DTS in 5.1 and 7.1 channels. The player lets you change the audio channel and, on Mac, the output audio device.

The program also opens music files on their own, including MP3, AAC, FLAC, APE, WMA, OGG, AC3 and WAV. FLAC and APE files play as lossless audio.

Playback controls and screen size

The bottom bar of Aiseesoft Blu-ray Player holds play, pause, stop and volume. Moving the pointer to the top of the window reveals a second bar for switching audio tracks, video tracks and subtitles, and for entering full-screen mode.

The picture can be shown at half size, normal size, double size or fit to screen. Forward and backward navigation moves through the video. The Mac version allows custom hotkeys for forward, backward, volume up and down, play and stop. Further parameter settings adjust how the video looks during playback.

Snapshots of video frames

A snapshot button on the control bar saves the current frame as a still image in JPEG, PNG or BMP format. A folder button next to it opens the location of captured images. You can change the save destination in Preferences. Snapshots work with video files as well as DVD playback.

Media and disc playlists

Aiseesoft Blu-ray Player can build playlists for music and video. A playlist can mix movies, TV episodes, music albums, DVD films and Blu-ray content. The player moves through the items in order automatically, so a series of episodes or an album plays without opening each file separately.

Windows and Mac editions

Windows and macOS each have a separate build with its own download and license. The core functions are shared: disc, folder and ISO playback, file playback, track selection and snapshots. The Mac page additionally describes the upscaling effect, screen-size modes and customizable hotkeys. A license covers one computer, while the multi-user license covers three computers for business use.
