Alcohol 52% reads an optical disc into an image file and mounts compatible image files as virtual CD or DVD drives. Windows and disc-based programs then see the mounted image through a drive letter without requiring the physical disc in the tray. Alcohol 52% acts on sector-based disc images rather than ordinary folders. It does not contain the image-burning, direct disc-copy, rewritable-disc erase, or custom compilation commands found in the larger Alcohol edition.
Images preserve disc layout
Image Making Wizard reads a selected optical drive and writes the disc structure to storage. MDS is the default descriptor format, though the wizard can save another supported image type. A small descriptor may sit beside a much larger data file, so copying only one part can leave an unusable image.
The output needs enough free disk space for the source content. Reading several discs can consume far more space than their visible file lists suggest because the image records disc layout information as well as accessible files.
Disc type guides reading
The wizard has data-type profiles that adjust reading behavior for the source. Choosing a profile by guess can apply the wrong error handling or measurement settings. Inspect the disc and select the matching data type before starting a long read.
Some protected media uses Data Position Measurement. The official workflow requires a compatible drive and may need a slower measurement speed for a more accurate CD result. Not every optical drive can perform that reading. Repeating the same settings on unsupported hardware does not create the missing measurement capability.
Errors need context
A read error can mean damaged media, an unsupported drive behavior, or an intentional protection pattern. Alcohol 52% records the operation in its log and performance graph. Stopping at the first error may be correct for a scratched data disc but incorrect for a protection profile that expects particular error sectors.
The chosen data type determines how the program treats those sectors. Use the profile before deciding that every reported error is harmless. An image that finishes can still fail when mounted if important source data could not be read.
Virtual drives mount files
A virtual drive gives a selected image its own Windows drive letter. Programs can browse it through File Explorer or open it as if a disc were present. Mounting does not extract the image into a normal folder and does not alter the source image by itself.
The drive letter must be free. Changing it can break a shortcut or installer that expects the previous letter. Multiple virtual drives also make it easy to mount the correct image in the wrong device, so check the displayed image name before starting a disc-based program.
Explorer gains commands
Shell extensions associate image formats with Alcohol 52% and add mounting actions to File Explorer. The documented association list includes CCD, CUE, ISO, BWF, CDI, MDS, and NRG. An associated extension changes its icon and context action, not the data inside the file.
Disabling an association can make the right-click Mount Image action disappear even though Alcohol 52% still opens the format through its manager. Adding an arbitrary extension does not make an unsupported file into a valid disc image.
Deletion can bypass recovery
An option can delete an image directly instead of sending it to the Recycle Bin. This avoids keeping a second large copy in the recycle area, but it removes the normal recovery step. A mistaken deletion can erase hours of disc reading at once.
Leave direct deletion off unless another verified copy exists. Unmounting and deleting are different actions: unmounting removes the virtual disc from its drive, while deleting removes the stored image data.
Edition names matter
Manual pages can show controls for both Alcohol editions. Commands marked for the larger edition do not become available merely because they appear in the shared documentation. Alcohol 52% concentrates on image creation, discovery, and virtual drives.
This distinction matters when a workflow ends with a recordable disc. Alcohol 52% can prepare or mount the image, but it does not supply the related burning wizard. That final write requires another supported program or the other Alcohol edition.
