Overview

Ashampoo Photo Commander FREE is a Windows photo manager and editor for organizing image collections, correcting photographs and turning them into presentations or printable designs. It combines folder browsing, metadata editing and batch operations with individual photo tools.

Organizing photo collections and metadata

The browser shows selected folders as thumbnails beside an image preview. Filters narrow the selection by file type, creation date or size. Sorting and grouping change its presentation, while albums bring together images from different folders for viewing and processing.

Search accepts a location and matching criteria, displaying results in a table that can become an album. Duplicate searches compare pictures against a selected image or examine a folder automatically. You choose which matches to move or delete.

Titles, tags and star ratings can be assigned while browsing. The IPTC editor writes information such as author and keywords across a photo selection. Location browsing groups pictures by country, city and other address details using their GPS metadata.

For photographs without a shooting location, Ashampoo Photo Commander FREE accepts coordinates or an address. It stores the resulting geotag in EXIF or IPTC fields. Saved address presets can apply the same location to several pictures.

Editing individual photographs in Ashampoo Photo Commander FREE

Color correction and local adjustments

Quick-Fix applies color, contrast and compression-artifact correction together or runs selected adjustments separately. Manual color controls use sliders and numeric values. A histogram shows the color distribution, while curves provide adjustable points for individual color components.

Local adjustments use an Effect Pen with a chosen brush size, opacity and effect strength. You paint the effect onto the required area. Red-eye correction selects the affected eye; cloning copies detail from a chosen source onto the brushed area.

Cropping and perspective

Cropping trims the picture to an adjustable selection, with aspect-ratio presets controlling its shape. Resizing accepts new dimensions and can lock the proportions. Horizon correction uses a drawn line and grid, automatically zooming to avoid exposed borders.

Perspective handles adjust individual edges. The editor can show original and modified pictures side by side. Saving overwrites the current image, while exporting saves it in another format; automatic backups retain earlier states for restoration in a configurable storage location.

Objects and foreground extraction

Text, arrows, callouts, shapes and inserted images remain selectable objects during editing. Handles adjust position and size, while object order determines which items sit above others. Text has font and color controls, and arrows can be curved.

Hints combine a caption with a separately positioned pointer. The cut-out tool isolates a foreground subject using markers. After marking the extraction area, you inspect the preview and protect any missing foreground portions with another marker.

Refining the markers is useful where foreground colors resemble the background. The resulting selection can be saved or placed against another image.

Batch conversion and file naming in Photo Commander FREE

Batch processing applies reusable operations to selected images or folders. You add commands, arrange their order, configure individual options and inspect the preview before conversion. Command lists can be exported and imported for another selection.

Output settings choose a destination folder and image format. Quality or compression controls depend on that format. Conversion creates new files; file-handling options can carry over the original file date or delete the old files instead of retaining exported copies alongside them.

Batch renaming uses a pattern containing sequence numbers, the original name or a date. A results table previews proposed names. Additional controls remove or replace selected text across the selection.

JPG rotation can use EXIF orientation information to turn selected photographs according to the orientation recorded when they were taken. This operation uses the pictures' metadata instead of requiring a separate rotation choice for each image.

Photo projects, presentations and output

Photo Commander FREE creates several kinds of project from selected pictures. The same photo selection can be reused for editing, conversion or a finished project. Their controls differ according to whether the output is an editable composition, a set of calendar pages or a browsable web album.

  • Collages and cards: Choose a layout or card design, then backgrounds, frames and other appearance options. Collages can open as editable objects or become finished images immediately. Photographs inserted into a card remain adjustable during editing.
  • Calendars: Select the design, calendar year and first day of the week. Add personal dates and adjust fonts and colors. Output can be separate image pages or a single PDF containing the calendar.
  • HTML albums: Choose a design and navigation behavior, such as previous and next buttons around the main image. Output contains an HTML file and an images folder. Both are needed when placing the album on a web server.

Slideshows

Instant slideshows use pictures currently visible in the browser. Music, display duration, sequence and repeat settings control the presentation. A separate presentation monitor can show photos while the primary display retains the controls; edits also appear in the presentation window.

Exported slideshows become a video file or CD/DVD presentation. Settings cover resolution, photo duration, transitions, motion effects and background music. Smaller pictures can retain their size or be enlarged to fill the chosen output dimensions.

Printing and shared copies

Printing supports individual photographs, batches and thumbnail sheets. Page settings control alignment and image size. Contact sheets add rows, columns, spacing and optional headings or file details.

Selected pictures can be combined into one PDF, and an individual image can also be exported as a PDF. For email or other sharing, image preparation adjusts dimensions and colors before producing the copy to send.

Metadata removal strips embedded details such as author, location and date from the shared image. Collection metadata can remain useful locally while being removed from the copy being sent, providing a separate output choice for sharing.
