AVS Document Converter is a Windows program for viewing documents and converting them between formats. It opens PDF, Word, OpenDocument, e-book and several other file types, then saves them as PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, TXT, ODT, HTML, images or e-books. Alongside conversion, it can merge files, add text watermarks, password-protect PDFs, rename output in batches, pull images out of documents and pack files into ZIP archives. AVS4YOU offers the program as a free download. It has no macOS or Linux version.
Opening and viewing documents
Each added document opens in its own tab, and the preview area works as a basic reader. It shows one page at a time or a thumbnail grid of all pages, with page navigation, zoom and printing. Password-protected PDFs open after you enter their password; PDF is the only protected format AVS Document Converter accepts.
Which formats convert to which
AVS Document Converter reads PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, ODT, PPT, PPTX, HTML, MHT, TXT, TIFF, EPUB, DjVu, FB2, XPS and MOBI. Not every input can reach every output. When the program cannot convert a document to the chosen format, it marks the document’s tab with an icon.

For every target you pick an output button such as To PDF or To Image, adjust that format’s settings, choose a folder and start the batch. The program processes all open documents together.
PDF to Word
Converting a PDF to Word in AVS Document Converter offers three layout modes. Per Character reproduces the original page as exactly as possible, at the cost of a much larger file. Line by Line keeps text in its original lines and preserves much of the formatting. Word Processing produces a document meant for further editing in a word processor such as Microsoft Word. The program does not recognize text in scanned PDFs, so a PDF made of page images will not become editable text.
Images, HTML and plain text
The To Image option saves pages as JPEG, PNG, GIF or TIFF. JPEG output has a quality setting, and TIFF output has a choice of compression type.
HTML output comes in three types: Plain HTML, Rich HTML and MHT. Rich HTML can include a small toolbar inside the page with zoom, fit-to-page, fit-to-width and page navigation buttons.
TXT output lets you pick a text encoding. Converting to plain text drops all formatting and keeps only the words.
Making e-books
AVS Document Converter can turn documents into EPUB, FB2 or MOBI files for e-readers. Two settings shape the result. Save Cover takes the document’s first page and stores it as an image to serve as the book cover. Embedded Fonts, available for EPUB only, packs the document’s original fonts into the book. If a font is not installed on the computer, the program replaces it with a default font. Embedding can make the file noticeably larger.
Merging several files into one
When several documents are open, the Merge section can combine them into a single output file instead of one file per document. Merging is available for PDF, TIFF and the three e-book formats. A Change order button lets you move files up and down to set the page sequence. You can untick any file you want to leave out of the combined document.
Watermarks and PDF passwords
You can stamp a text watermark on PDF and image output. You set its font, size, style, color and opacity, and place it diagonally in either direction, horizontally across the center or vertically. It applies to every document in the batch.
For PDF output, the Permissions setting adds two kinds of password. Anyone opening the file must first enter a user password. An owner password controls the permissions themselves. With it, you can block editing, printing, copying of content, or any combination of the three. The two passwords must be different and can be up to 32 characters long.
Renaming, image extraction and sharing
The Rename section sets output file names for the whole batch. You can keep the original names, or use Text+Counter or Counter+Text. These options combine your own text with a running number. A preview next to the name field shows how the result will look.
Extract Images saves the pictures inside the open documents in their original format, size and quality, with a separate subfolder for each source document.
Create Archive packs selected files into a ZIP archive with an optional password. Send by Email opens your default mail program with the chosen files or archive already attached.
Command line mode
AVS Document Converter can also run from the command line. It converts documents in bulk, merges files, watermarks PDFs and applies PDF editing, copying and printing restrictions without using the interface.
