Overview

FinePrint inserts an editable print-job stage between a program’s Print command and the destination printer. The source program renders its document into pages and sends those pages to a FinePrint printer entry. FinePrint can then remove pages or change their sheet layout before sending the result onward. It does not rewrite the word-processing file, spreadsheet or web page that produced them. Returning to the source document still requires the program that owns that document.

The preview edits output rather than the source document

The preview can delete an unwanted page or discard a blank one after the source program has printed the job. Cropping changes the visible page edge in that job. Erasing selected text or an image removes it from the rendered output, while markup and electronic letterhead add material over those pages. Every edit remains in the pending print job; none changes the original document.

The Layout tab can place two, four or eight source pages on one sheet. The preview changes as another layout is selected, so the sheet arrangement appears before the physical print begins. Duplex handling has a separate path. A printer with duplex hardware can use its double-sided capability, while a single-sided printer needs two print passes. The Printers tab has a Wizard that tests printer capabilities when the correct duplex behavior is unknown.

Separate programs can append pages to one job

An open FinePrint job can receive pages from more than one source program. A word processor can send a cover, then a browser can append a web page by printing to the same open job. A spreadsheet can add another rendered section without sharing an editable format with either source. FinePrint combines the resulting pages because each source uses the Windows print path.

This workflow depends on the Print command. Opening a document on the computer does not place it into FinePrint. Every source that should join the assembled job must print its rendered pages to the same open FinePrint job. The source programs do not need to share an editable file format.

Notes and printer entries can remember repeated work

A signature begins as an image. The preview accepts that image through drag-and-drop or the clipboard. Saving it as a Note keeps it available for later jobs. A Note named “signature” receives its own page context-menu entry, which removes the need to import the same image for each document.

The settings can also create several FinePrinter entries. Each entry can remember a different layout, letterhead, stamps and destination. A prepared entry can apply those settings without opening the preview. This saves a repeated setup, but it also means that choosing the wrong FinePrinter can route the job through settings that the user never sees before printing.

Saving a FinePrint job preserves the assembled rendered pages so FinePrint can reopen them later. It does not turn those pages back into the original editable documents. Remote Desktop, Citrix and shared Windows server printer use require FinePrint Server Edition; the workstation edition does not cover those server sessions.
