Ashampoo Backup refers to the Ashampoo Backup Pro family, which creates scheduled copies of selected files or complete Windows drives. A file backup protects chosen folders, while an image backup records partitions and the information needed to restore a damaged system disk. The program runs backup plans on a schedule and can write to local disks, network storage, or supported cloud destinations. It does not make one copy suitable for every recovery situation.
Choose the plan
The plan begins with a backup type, source, destination, schedule, and retention rules. Ashampoo Backup does not treat a file plan and a drive-image plan as interchangeable after creation. Changing the goal may require a new plan rather than editing the old one.
This matters when a user first protects documents, then assumes the same plan can rebuild Windows. File backup can restore those documents, but it lacks the partition layout and system data of an image. A full image also consumes more space and takes longer to create.
Destination must survive
A backup stored only on the protected internal disk can disappear with that disk. An external drive, network share, or remote destination separates the copy from the source. The destination still needs enough free space for new versions and the retention policy.
Disconnecting an external drive during a job creates an incomplete run. Leaving it permanently attached exposes it to accidental deletion and some ransomware. Ashampoo Backup can schedule work, but the owner still needs a routine for connecting, checking, and safely removing the storage.
Encryption has no reset
Backup encryption protects the archive from someone who obtains the storage. The same protection blocks the owner when the password is lost. Ashampoo cannot reveal encrypted content through an account reset.
Store the password separately from the protected computer and test it with a small restore. A password manager entry helps only if its own recovery plan survives the same disk failure.
Cloud files need data
OneDrive can display placeholders for files whose contents exist only online. A local backup cannot copy bytes that Windows has not downloaded. Ashampoo’s guidance requires the needed OneDrive material to remain on the device and may require changing the default exclusion.
A green check or local availability should be confirmed before the backup runs. Folder names alone do not prove that every cloud file has local content. This constraint also explains why a file count can differ between OneDrive and the finished archive.
Rescue starts outside Windows
A system image becomes most important when Windows cannot start. Ashampoo Backup uses bootable rescue media for that case. The rescue environment must detect the keyboard, storage controller, target disk, and the location that holds the image.
Create and boot the rescue USB before an emergency. Reaching the first screen is not enough; confirm that it can see the backup drive or network share. A rescue stick created years earlier may lack support for replacement hardware.
Chains need testing
Incremental backups save changed data after an earlier backup. They reduce repeated storage, but restoration depends on the required chain remaining readable. Aggressive cleanup, destination damage, or an interrupted job can reduce the available restore points.
Use the built-in verification and perform occasional test restores to another folder or spare disk. A successful job message proves that the write finished under its checks; a test restore proves that the expected files can return. Ashampoo Backup earns trust through that recovery test, not through schedule history alone.
