Overview

FortKnox Personal Firewall filters network connections made by a Windows computer. It evaluates inbound traffic that reaches local services and outbound traffic created by installed programs, then applies application, address, protocol and port rules. A connection view and logs show which process communicated and what rule handled it. FortKnox Personal Firewall controls traffic. It does not prove that every allowed program is safe, and blocking a connection cannot remove malicious code already stored on the machine.

Application rules

An application rule identifies an executable and states what network access it may use. A broad allow rule prevents repeated prompts but gives the program more reach. A narrow rule can restrict remote addresses, ports or direction. When an application updates to another path or executable, the old rule may no longer match and a new prompt can appear.

The filename shown in a prompt is only one clue. Malware can copy a familiar name into another folder. FortKnox Personal Firewall users should check the full path, publisher signature and reason for the connection before approval. A temporary deny is safer than a permanent allow when the user does not expect the request.

Outbound blocking can expose background dependencies that were invisible before. License checks, cloud sync, update services and embedded web content may use different processes or destinations. Blocking one can make the visible application fail without naming the firewall as the cause. The log and a short controlled rule change help identify that dependency.

Inbound traffic and sharing

Stateful inspection tracks active conversations and distinguishes replies from unsolicited inbound packets. Services that accept new connections still need explicit rules. File and printer sharing should normally be available only on the intended trusted network profile, not every public Wi-Fi connection.

Anti-spoofing and intrusion controls look for traffic patterns that violate their rules. They reduce exposure but cannot fix a vulnerable service that the user deliberately publishes. The service itself still needs updates, authentication and a limited listening address.

Logs and site controls

FortKnox Personal Firewall connection and packet logs record allowed or denied activity with addresses and ports. A large log needs filtering by process and time. One blocked packet does not establish an attack; internet hosts regularly send unsolicited scans. Repeated targeted attempts against an exposed service provide more useful evidence.

Site, cookie, referer and browser-related controls operate through supported traffic paths. Encrypted HTTPS limits what a network filter can read without browser integration or certificate interception. A rule that blocks a domain also can affect several unrelated pages when they load a shared content host.

Running with Windows security

FortKnox Personal Firewall should be the deliberate network-filtering layer. Running two third-party firewalls with low-level drivers can create duplicate prompts, inconsistent decisions or lost traffic. Windows firewall state and other security products need review during installation.

Rules form part of the FortKnox Personal Firewall security configuration, so export or back them up when that option exists. Resetting to defaults can clear a mistaken policy, but it also removes deliberate access for local services. After a major change, web browsing alone is not a complete test. Check updates, file sharing, remote access and each server process under the network profile where it normally runs.
