Overview

FotoSketcher is a free photo-to-art application for Windows and macOS. Its current Studio edition turns existing photographs into pencil drawings, ink sketches and paintings, with controls for the marks, colors and textures that form the result. Processing takes place on the computer and works offline, using image-processing algorithms to transform the supplied photograph. No account or subscription is required, and commercial use is permitted.

Previewing and applying a FotoSketcher effect

FotoSketcher keeps the source photograph separate from the working result. After selecting an effect, you adjust its sliders and inspect a preview calculated from a small area of the picture. The preview can be magnified to examine the treatment more closely before applying it to the full-resolution image.

The controls change with the chosen effect. A drawing can emphasize outlines, while a painting can use larger brushes or more rendering passes. Settings such as iteration count affect the amount of processing as well as the appearance, so a full render can take longer than the preview. A split view places the source and result on either side of a movable divider for comparison.

Pencil strokes

One pencil effect detects edges and renders them as dark strokes against a light background. Another follows the picture’s contours with flowing strokes, allowing their length, blending and contrast to be adjusted. Its color control can bring color from the original photograph into the drawing.

Crosshatching builds shade from intersecting sets of fine lines. Dark regions receive denser marks, while light regions remain more open. FotoSketcher lets you change the density, stroke length and line weight, as well as the prominence of outlines.

Watercolour, oil pastel and impasto

The painting effects reconstruct the photograph with simulated painted marks. The first Watercolour effect uses radiating strokes that overlap and blend. Brush size changes the scale of those marks, opacity changes how transparent they appear, and edge intensity can bring definition back to shapes within the wash.

A second Watercolour method grows regions of color outward from seed points, producing blended areas rather than placing individual brush strokes. The available painting choices also include oil pastel and impasto brushstrokes.

Selective effects

The Manual Brush applies an effect to selected parts of the picture. After choosing a treatment and its settings, you paint across the canvas with the mouse. A colored overlay marks the area being selected before processing. This allows one area to receive a drawing or painting treatment while other areas retain their existing appearance.

FotoSketcher can also build a result through successive effects. The Erase background setting determines whether an effect clears the background to white or draws over the existing image. This makes it possible to place crosshatching over an earlier painting treatment. For a different combination, the image-blending dialog mixes the source, working image or a result from the history gallery using an adjustable blend amount and modes such as Multiply, Screen and Overlay.

Image finishing

Cropping changes the picture’s boundaries, while rotation and resizing prepare its orientation and dimensions. Resizing accepts pixels or percentages and can lock the aspect ratio. Frames have adjustable margin sizes and colors; custom frame images and a brushstroke border provide other ways to surround the artwork.

Captions have controls for size, color, opacity and a drop shadow. An image watermark can be moved, resized proportionally and faded with an opacity slider. Transparent PNG logos are supported, and a caption and logo can be applied together.

FotoSketcher opens JPEG, PNG, WebP and BMP images, including PNG transparency. Finished pictures can be saved as JPEG, PNG or WebP.

Batch mode and the Script Editor

Batch mode applies the selected effect and its current parameters to every image in a chosen folder. The processed files are saved beside the originals with an added suffix, leaving separate source and result files.

For a treatment involving several operations, the Script Editor can chain effects, blend intermediate results and add text, textures or frames. Its command buttons insert the required syntax, and the sequence can be saved as a script file for later use.
