About AI Tools

The label 'AI tool' now covers a crowd of very different programs: chat assistants, image and video upscalers, character roleplay apps, transcription helpers, and code companions. Most of the desktop apps in this group are thin clients. They wrap a cloud model, so the real work happens on a remote server and an internet connection is required every time you use them.

A smaller number do genuine local inference. Those download multi-gigabyte model files and lean hard on your graphics card, which is worth knowing before you install something that expects 8 GB of video memory. Video upscalers often sit in this camp and can take minutes per clip on modest hardware. Privacy is the other thing to weigh, since anything you type into a hosted assistant leaves your computer, and retention policies vary between vendors.

The programs listed here are the installable kind, with a real setup file rather than a browser-only service. If a tool you want exists only as a website, it will not appear in this category. When you are choosing, the two things that matter most are where the processing runs and what happens to your input afterwards. A local model keeps your data on your machine; a cloud one trades that for speed and lower hardware demands.
