GroupMe App is a group messaging app for Android, iPhone and iPad, with a web version for desktop browsers. It brings a group’s conversations, shared files, polls and calls into the same space. Members can keep a general conversation together while using separate Topics for discussions that need their own thread.
Group membership
A GroupMe group has a name, a picture and a member list. Its creator can add people using existing contacts, names, email addresses or phone numbers. In the United States, people added by phone number can receive group messages through SMS, giving a group a way to include members who are not using the app.
Owners and administrators choose whether everyone can edit group settings and manage membership or whether those actions are restricted to administrators. In an administrator-only group, the owner can also block former members from rejoining and unblock them later.
Topics
Topics add individual conversation spaces inside an existing group. An owner or administrator gives each topic a name and can add a description and picture. A class group, for example, could keep assignment questions in one topic while using the main chat for general conversation. All members can read and write in every topic; topics organize discussion within the group rather than creating separate membership lists.
GroupMe lets members mute the main conversation and topics independently, or mute them all together. Topics also support pinned messages, polls and calendar events.
Polls
Any group member can turn a question into a poll with up to ten answer options and a chosen closing date and time. The poll appears in the conversation, and members receive a notification when it is created. Each person selects an option and can then view the results.
Votes can be changed until the poll closes, but its creator cannot edit the available answers after creating it. The creator can end voting early.
Shared media
Photos, videos and documents can accompany messages in GroupMe. Members can take a new photo or select an existing one, add a caption or place text over the image before sending it. Shared photos are collected automatically in the group’s gallery, where they can be found again outside the flow of messages.
Document sharing accepts Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, PDFs, Photoshop PSD files and Illustrator AI files, with a 50 MB attachment limit. A shared document appears as a download link in the conversation and can also be found through the chat’s gallery.
Searching messages on mobile
On mobile, message search provides another route back into a conversation. Results appear as the member enters search terms, and selecting a result opens the corresponding message. This message-search function is limited to the mobile apps.
Group calls
GroupMe supports free group voice and video calls with up to 100 people at the same time. A call begins from a group conversation, and a Join button appears in the conversation and chat list for other members. Participants can turn their cameras and microphones on or off and change audio settings during the call.
The call view identifies participants and the person currently speaking. Calls use an internet connection, and GroupMe does not record or save them.
GroupMe Campus
GroupMe Campus helps students find groups associated with their college, university or trade school. Access begins by verifying a school email address, after which students can discover groups and connect with classmates by subjects such as major or graduation year. Campus operates independently of the institution rather than serving as a school-managed group directory.
Copilot
Copilot adds AI conversations to GroupMe through a direct chat or an @Copilot mention in a group. Members can ask questions, request generated images, upload images for analysis or forward a selected message using Ask Copilot. Follow-up questions can continue the exchange rather than starting a separate request each time.
Copilot receives the messages people choose to send it; it does not gain access to the rest of the group’s conversation history. Group owners and administrators can allow everyone, only administrators or nobody to address Copilot in their group. Its generated replies can contain errors, so they need checking when factual accuracy matters.
