K-Lite Codec Pack Full is a collection of audio and video playback components for Windows, bundled with the MPC-HC media player. It supplies the filters that open media files, decode their contents and send the picture and sound to playback devices. The Full edition adds madVR video rendering and an H.264 MVC decoder for stereoscopic video to the components included in Standard.
K-Lite’s splitter and decoder filters
K-Lite separates the file container from the compressed media inside it. LAV Splitter handles the streams carried in containers such as MKV, MP4, AVI and WebM, while LAV Video and LAV Audio decode the picture and sound. Supported video formats include H.264, HEVC and AV1; audio playback also covers files such as MP3 and FLAC. Compatible graphics hardware can take over supported video decoding tasks through hardware acceleration.
These filters can serve other DirectShow players as well as the included MPC-HC. The modern Windows Media Player uses Media Foundation and does not use K-Lite’s DirectShow components. K-Lite Codec Pack Full also does not expand the import formats of professional editors that use their own codec systems. The VFW and ACM encoding codecs supplied with the larger Mega edition are outside Full’s contents.
Video rendering
After decoding, the video renderer determines how frames reach the display. K-Lite Codec Pack Full includes MPC Video Renderer and madVR. With MPC-HC, either renderer can send HDR metadata to a compatible television or convert HDR colors to SDR for an ordinary display. MPC Video Renderer also handles Dolby Vision, while madVR provides scaling algorithms for enlarging video to the output resolution.
The Full edition’s H.264 MVC plugin handles stereoscopic 3D video through the 64-bit MPC-HC player and madVR. It needs a graphics driver that still supports this output; newer NVIDIA drivers have removed that support. Side-by-side and top/bottom video use a different arrangement, with the two views carried inside a normal video image for a compatible television to interpret.
Disc playback
MPC-HC can also play DVDs and decrypted Blu-ray discs. Blu-ray playback opens the longest title automatically and offers other titles through its navigation controls, but does not display Blu-ray menus. Decrypting a protected disc requires a separate tool.
Track selection
For files containing several soundtracks or subtitle streams, MPC-HC and LAV Splitter provide track selection. Stored language preferences let the splitter choose audio and subtitles automatically. Its advanced subtitle rules can depend on the language of the selected audio, including whether a subtitle track is marked as forced or default.
Audio output
Audio can be decoded on the computer or passed in compressed form to a receiver that supports the format. LAV Audio and the Codec Tweak Tool expose these output choices. S/PDIF passthrough is limited to AC3 and DTS, while HDMI can carry supported HD audio formats. During passthrough, the receiver performs decoding and controls volume.
Codec management
The Codec Tweak Tool brings the included filters’ configuration screens together and can back up or restore settings. It also helps investigate conflicts by disabling selected filters, rather than removing the entire pack. Its diagnostic log lists installed codecs and filters, and its repair controls detect broken registrations and offer to remove the affected entries. MPC-HC’s active filter list shows which components are being used for the current file.
Explorer thumbnails
K-Lite Codec Pack Full includes Icaros components for browsing media outside the player. They generate video thumbnails in File Explorer and expose additional file properties, including duration and picture dimensions for MKV and FLV files.
