XMedia Recode is a media converter for changing the container, video codec, audio codec, subtitles, resolution, or other properties of an existing recording. It accepts individual files and batches, then places configured jobs in a queue. The source remains separate from the output, so the user can make a smaller copy for a phone, convert an unsupported format for editing, extract audio, or rebuild a file with selected streams.
Container and codec
The filename extension describes a container, while the streams inside use codecs. An MP4 file can carry several video and audio combinations, and changing only the extension does not convert them. XMedia Recode separates format selection from video and audio configuration so the output container and its streams can be chosen together.
A device profile can fill in a compatible starting point, but it cannot know every playback restriction of a television, car unit, or older phone. Resolution, frame rate, audio layout, subtitle type, and codec level can still decide whether the file plays. A short sample is safer than converting a long recording before testing the target device.
Copy or encode
A compatible stream can be copied without recompression. Copying is fast and preserves the original encoded data, but it cannot apply changes that alter the picture or sound. Resizing, cropping, deinterlacing, color correction, noise reduction, volume processing, and codec changes require encoding the affected stream.
This creates a common mismatch: selecting copy mode while expecting a filter to appear. If the video passes through unchanged, a video filter has no encoded output in which to take effect. The same principle applies to audio processing. Copy mode suits repackaging; encoding suits transformation.
Tracks and subtitles
XMedia Recode can retain, remove, or convert selected audio and subtitle tracks. External SRT, ASS, and SSA subtitles can be added, while supported embedded subtitles can be extracted or rendered. Rendering subtitles makes them part of the video pixels and removes the viewer’s ability to turn them off. Keeping them as a separate track preserves that choice but requires container and player support.
Language labels and track order deserve checking before the job enters the queue. A batch profile can repeat the same selection across many files even when their track layouts differ. One source may place commentary first while another places the main soundtrack first.
Queue behavior
XMedia Recode files become jobs only after the current settings are added to the queue. Changing a tab afterward does not necessarily revise a job that is already queued. When several outputs need different resolutions or codecs, each configuration should be added and named deliberately before encoding begins.
Hardware encoding can reduce processing time through supported AMD, Intel, or Nvidia encoders. It is not available for every codec, pixel format, or graphics device, and its quality controls differ from software encoders. A missing hardware choice usually means the installed hardware or driver does not expose the selected path.
Disc limits
XMedia Recode can process unprotected DVD and Blu-ray material. It does not remove copy protection. A commercial disc that cannot be read is therefore outside the documented workflow rather than a conversion error. For ordinary files, keeping the source until the output has been watched, scanned, and synchronized prevents a failed conversion from becoming the only copy.
