Overview

Norton is known for its anti-virus software, so it’s a surprise to see a web browser from the brand. When you consider the rationale behind it, it makes sense in light of what AI has done to browsing. The web is noisier and less trustworthy than ever, and most of the AI browsers that came to solve the problem were more about intelligence than safety. Norton Neo is Gen Digital’s bid to do both — an AI-native browser that integrates Norton’s security capabilities into the core, not as an afterthought.

Neo went live in an early access version in May 2025 and was released worldwide for free (no waitlist) on December 2, 2025. It is available for Windows and macOS, and an Android version is available in early 2026, while an iOS version is announced. The browser is based on Chromium, which means that it renders sites in the same way as Chrome, and it imports bookmarks, passwords, and history from other browsers during installation.

Zero-Prompt AI Assistant

Most AI browser features require the user to type a command. Neo’s assistant is different, Gen calls it “zero-prompt,” which is to say that the assistant guesses what the user needs without waiting to be told. It can summarize articles, provide calendar reminders from the content of the page, and round up open tabs without the user having to give a specific command each time. The idea is to eliminate the need to learn commands or maintain a list of possible actions, and the help is to be provided as part of the browsing process, not via a chat window.

Magic Box

Natural language is the main input method for the Magic Box. Instead of having a separate address bar, search box, and AI chat, the Magic Box combines all three: a user can type a URL, a search query, a question, or a request to summarize the current page into the same field, and Neo understands the intent and responds accordingly.

Configurable Memory

Configurable Memory is the solution to the privacy issue that plagues most AI assistants: what does it remember about you and can you control it? Neo allows users to tell the browser what to remember — information for a project they are working on, sites they visit often, personal preferences — and what to forget. All of the things Neo has stored are listed in the settings for review, editing or deletion, and memory is turned off altogether for those who don’t want the browser to remember anything. The control is handled via a conversational interface, not a hidden settings menu.

Norton Web Shield and Phishing Protection

Neo incorporates Norton’s security layers into the browser. Web Shield blocks malicious sites before they load, while the phishing protection identifies and blocks phishing sites as they appear in the browsing stream. The Scam Analyzer takes this protection to webmail, scanning email for scam patterns. These protections are built into the browser, so no security extensions are needed.

Built-In Adaptive VPN

In 2026, a built-in VPN was added, based on Norton’s AI-native VPN application, Norton VPN for Agents. The VPN adjusts its encryption level based on the user’s activity, such as using it for online banking or simply browsing the web, without the user having to manually switch it on or off. This adaptive behavior is performed in the background as part of the browser’s normal functioning.

Tracker and Fingerprint Blocking

Neo automatically blocks ad trackers and cross-site tracking. The fingerprinting protection applies to 11 different types of signals that sites and advertisers use to identify a browser without cookies, making fingerprinting less effective. Ad blocking is integrated, which helps to keep pages cleaner and minimize the attack surface that adverts offer.

Prompt Injection Defense

Prompt injection is a potential issue with Neo, as an AI browser that interacts with web content, it could be tricked into performing actions it was not intended to do by malicious prompts embedded in a webpage. Neo has built-in protection against prompt injection, which doesn’t require the user to do anything.
