Overview

Perplexity AI App is a search and question-answer client that combines a conversational prompt with web research. A user asks a question in ordinary language, reads an answer assembled from retrieved material, and can open the attached references to inspect where individual statements came from. Follow-up questions stay in the same thread, so the user can narrow a broad subject without repeating the entire request. The app can also examine attached files, accept spoken questions, and carry selected work between phone, web, and desktop sessions.

Answers keep receipts

A normal search result gives a list of pages. Perplexity AI App instead writes a direct response and places source links beside the relevant claims. This makes comparison faster when the question has several parts, but the links still need inspection. A citation proves that a page contributed to the answer; it does not prove that the page is authoritative or that the generated sentence interpreted it correctly.

The next prompt can ask for a narrower explanation, a comparison, or a different output format. The thread preserves the earlier context. That convenience can also carry a bad assumption forward. When a later answer looks wrong, correcting the premise in the thread is safer than asking increasingly specific questions around it.

Files join threads

The Perplexity AI App attachment control accepts documents and images as well as audio or video. A short document can enter the active context in full. With a long file, Perplexity AI App extracts portions it judges relevant instead of reading every line into every answer. A question about a clause buried in an appendix may therefore need the section name, page, or exact phrase before the app finds it.

An attached file supports follow-up questions inside the session. It does not turn the app into the file’s editor by itself, and a generated table or summary still needs checking against the original. Scanned pages also depend on readable text recognition. Low contrast, handwriting, or a complex page layout can produce an incomplete interpretation.

Voice changes input

The voice assistant on iPhone starts a spoken conversation and can handle supported actions through other apps on the device. Microphone permission must be active, and an action can require access to contacts, calendars, or another protected area. The exact action set depends on the installed app and the operating system permissions; a request that works as a web question may not work as a device command.

Speech recognition also turns the recording into text before the answer stage. Proper names and technical terms can arrive incorrectly, especially in a noisy room. Reading the transcribed question before relying on a detailed response prevents a small recognition error from changing the subject.

Desktop reaches files

The desktop edition can work with local files and folders that the user chooses. Selecting a project folder avoids a new access request for every file inside that location. It also grants a wider working boundary, so the folder should contain only material appropriate for the task. Perplexity AI App can find, rename, move, or create supported files within granted locations; those actions affect the computer rather than a disposable web copy.

Remote Access can continue or monitor desktop work from another supported device. The desktop must remain available, and remote control does not remove the need to review a proposed file operation. For research, the safest routine remains simple: inspect important citations, name the relevant section in long attachments, and confirm any action that changes local files.
