Overview

Total Video Converter is a Windows application for converting video and audio into files for media players, portable devices, and optical discs. It combines encoding with clip selection, picture adjustments, audio extraction, and permanent subtitles. Its disc tools can turn converted MPEG video into a DVD structure and burn it, while a separate slideshow function creates video from photographs and music.

Formats and device profiles

Total Video Converter accepts formats including AVI, MP4, MOV, WMV, MKV, FLV, and RealMedia RM/RMVB, along with AVCHD recordings in MTS and M2TS files. Output choices include MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, and 3GP, as well as MPEG formats for DVD, SVCD, and VCD. Profiles also target devices such as an iPod, PSP, Xbox 360, or a 3GP phone, so the destination can be chosen by player type rather than by file extension alone.

Several files can enter the task list together, and each can use a different output format. Before encoding, the settings allow changes to video frame rate and bitrate, plus audio sample rate and bitrate.

DVD authoring

The Convert & Burn task connects conversion to the included disc burner. It offers DVD, VCD, SVCD, and audio-disc modes. For DVD output, the authoring stage packages MPEG files into the VOB, IFO, and BUP files used by a video DVD.

DVD source files must agree on video format, frame dimensions, and aspect ratio. PAL and NTSC material with different dimensions cannot be added together unchanged. Total Video Converter provides 4:3 and 16:9 aspect choices and a burning-speed setting. Its VCD and SVCD burning modes accept one video file at a time. AVCHD disc output is also available for compatible PS3 and Blu-ray players.

Trimming, merging and cropping clips

A preview window lets you play an imported movie and mark the beginning and end of the portion to convert. The output then contains that selected interval. A separate task combines several video and audio files into one output; its controls can add the picture and sound separately or replace either component before conversion.

Picture size is adjustable independently of the time selection. You can retain the original dimensions, choose a preset, or enter a custom width and height. Cropping uses separate values for the left, right, top, and bottom edges, allowing unwanted borders to be removed from the converted picture.

Permanent subtitles

Total Video Converter imports subtitle files such as SRT, SUB, SSA, and ASS through its Filters controls. It encodes the subtitle text into the video image while recompressing the movie. The resulting text travels with the picture and does not depend on the player loading a separate subtitle file; it also cannot be switched off as a separate playback track.

Separating soundtracks from video

Choosing an audio output extracts a video’s soundtrack into a file such as MP3, WAV, AAC, OGG, or AC3. The Video Options also provide a Disable Video setting for an audio-only conversion. Conversely, disabling audio removes the sound from the exported video.

Beyond conversion, Total Video Converter can demultiplex a file to separate its video and audio streams, or multiplex picture and sound into one file. These operations handle the media components separately, whereas the combine task assembles multiple source files into one result.

Photo slideshows

Photographs and music can be combined into a slideshow video, with transition effects between pictures. The finished presentation can use the program’s video output formats or be prepared for disc playback, bringing still images into the same conversion and burning workflow as imported movies.

Desktop capture

The package includes a capture tool that records desktop activity and games to video files.

Total Video Converter trial and licenses

Total Video Converter has a 15-day trial whose converted videos carry a watermark. Paid registration removes that watermark and the trial restrictions. Windows licenses are offered for one year or for lifetime use; the Mac edition is licensed separately.
