SRWare Iron is a free web browser for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. Built from Chromium and using the Blink rendering engine, it displays web pages while removing specific Google suggestion and reporting mechanisms from the browser. Its privacy changes concern what the browser sends during address entry, installation and error handling.
Address bar without Google lookups
SRWare Iron omits the mechanism that submits address-bar entries to Google to generate suggestions. This concerns text being entered, before the user finishes an address or search.
Mistyped addresses receive different treatment too. Iron does not use the alternate error-page mechanism that sends an invalid address to Google to obtain an error page.
Installation tracking and crash reports
SRWare Iron does not include an installation identifier for reporting a newly installed copy to Google, or the RLZ mechanism that encodes information about where and when the browser was obtained.
Iron also omits automatic submission of crash and failure details to Google’s servers.
Syncing bookmarks and passwords
Desktop SRWare Iron supports extensions for keeping bookmarks and passwords in separate services. Floccus, for example, synchronizes saved page references through Nextcloud or WebDAV. Bitwarden adds password management through its browser extension.
Google sign-in synchronization is another option in SRWare Iron, with additional access setup through a Chromium test-account group.
