TagScanner is a batch music-library organizer that edits metadata inside audio files and uses that metadata to rename files, build folders or create playlists. A tag stores information such as title, album, artist, track number and cover art inside or beside the audio container. TagScanner can change those fields without re-encoding the sound. It can also change the filename and directory path, but that is a separate Music Renamer action. This makes it suitable for a folder containing hundreds of inconsistently named tracks, not only one song at a time.
Four work areas
The window divides the work into Music Renamer, Tag Editor, Tag Processor and Playlist Maker. Tag Editor changes fields directly for one or many selected tracks. Music Renamer builds names and folders from existing fields. Tag Processor derives fields from a filename, imports text or brings in album information. Playlist Maker writes a list that compatible players can open.
The separation prevents one click from silently doing every kind of change. It also means that fixing tags does not automatically fix filenames. A user who edits the album and artist, then closes the program, may still see the old names in File Explorer until Music Renamer runs.
Selection controls scope
TagScanner loads files into a list and applies batch commands to the relevant selection. A field entered while several tracks are selected can write the same value across the whole selection. That is useful for a shared album name but destructive for track titles. Checking the selection count and which fields contain mixed values comes before pressing Save.
Read-only files, protected folders and files held open by another program can reject a write. TagScanner cannot bypass Windows permissions. Moving the collection to a writable location or closing the player addresses that failure more directly than repeating the same batch command.
Names use masks
Music Renamer combines placeholders for fields such as artist, album, disc and track number. A mask can create both a filename and a directory structure. The preview shows the proposed result before the filesystem changes. A missing field can produce an empty part, repeated separator or several identical names, so the preview deserves attention whenever the source tags are incomplete.
Renaming changes paths that playlists and other catalog programs may already reference. TagScanner can create a new playlist afterward, but an older playlist will still point to the previous locations. The audio data remains intact even when the library program can no longer find the moved file.
Online matches differ
Tag Processor can query supported album databases and map returned fields to selected tracks. The same album may have several releases with different dates, bonus tracks or numbering. Choosing a release by title alone can assign the wrong cover or shift track names when the selected files follow another edition. Duration, track count and order help confirm the match before import.
Cover art is metadata too. Embedding a large image in every track increases every file, while saving one folder image has a different effect outside TagScanner. Removing an embedded cover does not delete the audio, but it can change what a phone or car display shows.
Text can rebuild tags
When filenames already follow a consistent pattern, TagScanner can parse their parts into tag fields. A pattern must describe the real order and separators. One irregular filename can put an artist value into the title field or interpret a year as a track number. Processing a small sample first exposes that mismatch without spreading it through the entire collection.
