Overview

Tubi is a free, ad-supported streaming service for movies, TV series and live channels. Tubi, Inc. operates it as part of Fox Corporation’s Tubi Media Group. It runs in web browsers and through apps for Android and iOS phones and tablets. Apps also run on smart TVs, streaming players such as Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV and Google TV, and Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Tubi has no subscription and never asks for payment details. Movies and episodes play with short ad breaks, and there is no paid, ad-free option.

Movie and series library

The on-demand catalogue comes from studio partners such as MGM, Lionsgate and Paramount, from independent producers, and from Tubi Originals made for the service. Titles appear in genre rows and hubs, including horror, sci-fi and fantasy, anime, documentaries, classic TV and film, and Spanish-language categories. A search box finds specific titles. Each title shows its maturity rating.

The library is not the same everywhere, because rights are licensed country by country. A title marked “Not available” has no licence for the viewer’s region, and a film watched earlier can disappear when its licence ends. Tubi works out location from the IP address, so a VPN can show the wrong catalogue or stop playback. Outside the United States, Tubi operates in Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, Australia and several Latin American countries. Supported devices differ by country.

Live TV channels

Besides on-demand titles, Tubi streams linear channels that play a fixed schedule like broadcast television. The US lineup is grouped into sports, national and local news, business news and weather, entertainment channels for comedy, reality, classic TV, drama and true crime, lifestyle and food channels, and Spanish-language and family channels. Many of the local news channels carry a specific city’s station. The channel list changes over time and varies by location.

Tubi accounts and profiles

Users can register a free Tubi account with an email address or through Google, Facebook or Apple. Signing in turns on the Continue Watching row, which lists unfinished titles and follows the account to any supported device. It also provides a saved List of titles. Account settings on the web cover profile details, notifications, the Continue Watching row, the List and account deletion. In the US, users must be at least 13 to register.

One device can hold up to eight accounts. Each keeps its own watch progress, recommendations, list and settings, and viewers pick theirs from a “Who’s Watching” screen or the account switcher.

Tubi Kids

A parent can create Kids accounts linked to their own Tubi account and choose the content rating each child may see. They can protect the profile with a password or four-digit PIN. Kids accounts are only usable while the parent is signed in. Tubi Kids Mode is a quicker alternative that switches the device to the family library without any account. Leaving it requires confirming that an adult is present. Tubi does not build advertising profiles from Kids account or Kids Mode viewing.

Phone-to-TV playback

Depending on the device, viewers can sign in on a television through an emailed sign-in link, an activation code entered in a browser, or the Tubi phone app. The phone app can also send video to a TV in three ways. Chromecast and AirPlay (from iPhone or iPad to Apple TV or AirPlay 2 televisions) stream to the TV while the phone controls playback. Tubi Linking connects the phone app to the Tubi app already running on a Roku, Fire TV, Android TV or Google TV device on the same Wi-Fi network. Either the phone or the TV remote can then control the video.

Captions and audio description

Closed captions appear on titles whose content partners supply them. A CC icon next to the maturity rating shows they are available. Most non-English titles outside the Spanish-language sections carry English subtitles. The TV apps have their own caption settings for colour, opacity, size, font and background. The website has a caption preferences page, and the phone apps use the device’s system caption styles. Tubi also carries audio-described titles for blind and visually impaired viewers.
