VN Video Editor is a timeline-based video editor for iOS, Android, Mac and Windows. It handles everyday cutting and layering as well as speed ramps, keyframe animation, captions and beat-synced edits. It is for YouTube videos and short-form social video such as Shorts and Reels. The core editing tools are free and add no watermark. Some advanced filters are reserved for Pro users, and cloud-based AI functions consume credits.
Planning a video with Stories
Stories is a planning workspace in VN. A Story starts blank or from a script with a preset outline. You divide it into titled sections, each holding trimmed clips and optional notes on what each clip should show.
VN then converts the Story into an editable project. The Show Section Title Clip option opens each section with a title clip, and notes can carry over as text.
Timeline modes and tracks
The VN timeline holds separately adjustable video, audio and overlay tracks. The main track, carrying the primary footage, works in one of two modes:
- Quick Mode (the default) keeps clips connected, so trimming, deleting or reordering never leaves a gap.
- Pro Mode, enabled in Editor Preferences, keeps every clip at its exact timestamp. You can leave gaps deliberately and change a clip without moving the rest of the project.
In Pro Mode, Auto-Ripple decides what happens after a trim or deletion. When switched on, it shifts later clips to close the gap; when switched off, it leaves them where they were. The main track can sit at the bottom of the timeline (the default) or at the top.
Speed, motion and frame rate
You can set a clip’s speed as a single constant value or draw it as a curve. Curve mode starts from presets such as Montage, Hero Time, Bullet Time, Jump Cut, Fast In and Fast Out. You can add, move or remove control points to reshape the ramp. Speed ranges from 0.1x to 100x, and a change can apply to one clip or to every clip in the project.
Keyframes animate position, scale, rotation, opacity and other properties on video, images, text and audio. You set values at different points on the timeline with frame-level accuracy. VN fills in the motion between them, and easing curves shape the acceleration.
Frame interpolation generates in-between frames to raise lower-frame-rate footage to 30, 50 or 60 fps, smoothing motion and slow motion.
Cleaning up footage
VN’s stabilizer measures camera movement and shifts each frame to counter it. Its strength runs from Minimal Cropping through Recommended to Most Stable. Stronger settings crop more of the frame edges, and rolling-shutter wobble in fast footage may remain. Processing runs on the device without an upload.
Mosaic hides part of the picture using a chosen shape, size and effect: mosaic, triangle, hexagon or blur.
Filters apply a preset look in one tap, after which intensity, color and lighting remain adjustable. You can import your own .cube LUT files and save adjusted color settings as presets. Transitions sit between two adjacent clips with an adjustable duration. Basic and Matte transitions are free, while effects transitions and custom AI transitions use credits.
Captions, text and voice
Auto Captions transcribes speech in the video into subtitles timed to individual words. Two local models, Tiny and Base, run on the device in 43 languages, are free and keep the audio on the device. A cloud model uses credits and adds translation into 18 languages, plus filler-word removal for sounds such as “um” and “uh”. You can edit and retime lines, show them bilingually and style them with templates and animations.
For titles and on-screen text, VN offers text templates and controls for font, color, outline, shadow, background, alignment and spacing. Text to Speech turns a written script into narration with a choice of AI voices, tone, speed and pitch. It uses credits.
Music, beats and AutoCut
Audio tools cover a music and sound effects library, imported or extracted audio, voiceover recording, volume and fades. Denoise detects and reduces hiss, hum, wind, traffic and similar background noise on audio or video, with optional intensity control. It runs locally.
BeatsClips builds edits on a song’s rhythm. VN can detect beats automatically, or you can place, move and delete beat markers by hand. Clips added to BeatsClips then snap to those beats. You can save the setup as a template and share it through a VN Code or a file. AutoCut applies such a template to selected photos and videos, producing a beat-synced edit whose rhythm and look change when you switch templates. It needs no cloud processing.
AI generation and templates
VN also includes AI tools that generate video from a text prompt or still image, generate, upscale and colorize images, and remove backgrounds. Cutout exports the subject of a single JPG or PNG as a transparent PNG; basic removal is free, while AI Cutout uses credits.
Templates built in the separate CawCut workflow tool also run in VN. Users scan the template’s code, supply the text or images its creator asked for and receive finished images or videos.
