Adobe Photoshop Elements is a photo editor for Windows and macOS that combines image correction, layered compositions and guided creative projects. It is designed for editing personal photographs, from removing an unwanted object to building a picture from several images. The accompanying Elements Organizer manages the photo and video collection used by those projects.
The editor offers different levels of assistance. Quick mode provides one-click fixes, Guided mode walks through a particular result, and Advanced mode gives access to more detailed editing.
Guided Edits
A Guided Edit gathers the tools for a defined photographic task and leads through their use. Background replacement starts with selecting the subject and placing it against another scene. Other guides help select an object and move, resize or duplicate it, so a change in composition does not require rebuilding the whole picture manually.
The guidance also covers treatments with several connected operations. Double exposure combines two photographs, while a selective-color effect keeps a chosen object or color and turns the rest black and white. Landscape edits bring together sky replacement, haze removal and object cleanup. Users can find these guides through familiar search terms and keyword tags rather than knowing the underlying tool names.
Repairing photos in Photoshop Elements
Photoshop Elements uses a brush-based Remove tool to mark distractions for removal. It can also detect people in the background, providing a selection for clearing them from the scene. Restoration tools address scratches, creases and other wear in older pictures, while automatic colorization adds color to black-and-white images or changes an existing color treatment.
Portrait controls address faces separately from the rest of the photograph. They include opening closed eyes, adjusting facial expression and head tilt, and smoothing skin. For selective focus, Depth Blur starts with a focal point and applies blur around it. Blur strength, focal distance and range remain adjustable, allowing the effect to follow the part of the picture the user wants to emphasize.
Compositing
Automatic selection tools isolate subjects, skies and backgrounds for changes to a particular region. A selected object can receive a new color, or the subject from one photograph can be combined with another background. Text can follow a path or shape, and its appearance can be changed with gradients, patterns and textures.
Layers keep the components of a composition available for further editing. Layer masks control which parts of an individual layer appear without deleting its pixels. Painting black on a mask hides an area, white reveals it, and gray creates partial transparency. This lets a mask blend the edge of an inserted subject while retaining the image underneath.
Generative tools and monthly credits
Generate Image creates a background or a complete image from a written description. Insert Object combines a brushed area with a description of the object to add. Generative Expand extends a photograph when its edges are dragged outward, filling the extra space with generated content, while Generative Upscale increases resolution and enhances detail in low-resolution images.
These operations consume generative credits. The standalone Photoshop Elements license includes 25 credits each month; the Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements bundle includes 100. Once the allowance is used, further generation requires waiting for the monthly reset or obtaining additional credits through a Firefly plan.
Camera Raw
Photoshop Elements can process RAW photographs from supported cameras through Adobe Camera Raw before opening them in the editor. Camera compatibility depends on the installed Camera Raw version. Adjustments made during RAW processing leave the original raw file unchanged, allowing further work to proceed from that source.
Saving to PSD or other formats
Saving a composition as PSD preserves its image data and layers for later editing. Separate output choices include JPEG with adjustable compression, PNG for lossless images with transparency, and TIFF with optional layer data. Save As can also add an edited image to the Organizer and keep it in a version set with the original, connecting the exported result to the photograph it came from.
Projects built from several photos
Collage templates arrange several photographs into a layout with added text. Photo Reels give each shot its own text, effects and graphics, then export the sequence as an MP4 or GIF. Customizable slideshows can combine photographs with short video clips. Access to Adobe Express templates extends project creation to items such as social posts and posters.
An individual photograph can also become an animation. Moving Elements applies motion to a selected region, with controls for direction and speed, and saves the result as MP4 or GIF. Animated overlays add movement such as falling snow or sparkles and export as MP4. These photo-animation tools belong to Photoshop Elements; the separate Premiere Elements application supplies broader video editing.
Elements Organizer
Elements Organizer imports photographs from sources including Google Drive, OneDrive and a phone through a QR code. Smart Tags identify subjects, and people recognition provides another route to finding pictures. Automatic sorting groups media by dates, subjects, people, places and events. Semantic search accepts a description of a photo or video even when the words do not match existing tags; this search is an English-only beta.
Duplicate detection presents matching copies and context for deciding which to retain. Automatic catalog backups preserve the organization of the collection, while Send to Phone uses a QR code to transfer finished pictures to a mobile device.
License term and catalog access
Photoshop Elements uses a paid, non-renewing three-year license. Access to the editor ends when that term expires, while the media catalog remains accessible in Elements Organizer.
