Ashampoo Photo Recovery is a Windows application for recovering deleted or lost pictures from computer drives and removable storage. It can also search inside individual files for embedded images, giving it a second use when a picture is contained in a document rather than available as a separate photo file.
Recovery sources
A drive search examines a selected hard disk, USB drive or memory card for pictures. Ashampoo Photo Recovery can look for images after accidental deletion, formatting or damage to a file system. The device list can be refreshed to include storage connected after the application was opened. Recovery depends on what remains on the source; new data written to that storage can reduce the chance of retrieving earlier images.
For a narrower search, the program accepts a single file instead of an entire drive. It can find images within PDF documents, Word files and EXE files. It also supports recovering individual frames from images with multiple pages or frames, including animations.
Scan filters
Search presets adjust the scan settings together, while individual controls let users define which images count as results. A minimum file size excludes small files, a maximum file size excludes larger ones, and minimum image dimensions restrict the search by width and height. These controls can reduce the number of small graphics returned when the desired material consists of larger photographs.
The search can include common photo and Internet formats, camera RAW files, modern photo formats and rare graphics formats. Supported types include JPG, PNG, BMP and GIF, alongside JPEG 2000, WebP and JPEG XR. RAW support includes Canon and Nikon formats and DNG, with recovery also available for photos from damaged RAW files. Users can enable the format groups relevant to the material they are seeking rather than include every group in every scan.
Source size and the chosen settings affect how long a search takes.
Photo selection
Ashampoo Photo Recovery displays recovered images as thumbnails for choosing what to retain. Individual pictures can be selected or cleared, and Select All and Select None handle the complete result set.
Recovered files are placed in the configured output folder, with a separate subfolder for each search. The output location can be changed in Configuration. Choosing Keep Selected Photos retains the selected images and removes unselected images from that recovery folder. An additional option opens the retained pictures in the default photo application when the results window closes.
