CutePDF Writer creates a PDF from the printed output of another Windows program. It installs a virtual printer, so a document, web page, drawing, or form reaches CutePDF Writer through the same Print dialog used for paper. The result is a new PDF file at a location chosen by the user. CutePDF Writer does not open an existing PDF for editing, and it does not change the original document.
Print into a PDF
Open the source in an application that can print, choose File and Print, then select CutePDF Writer from the printer list. The source program remains responsible for page size, margins, orientation, and which pages enter the job. A spreadsheet must therefore have the right print area before it reaches the PDF printer.
The Print to File box must remain off. CutePDF Writer opens its own save step after the print job leaves the source application. Turning on Print to File asks Windows or the source program for a printer output file instead, which can bypass the expected PDF naming dialog.
Add the converter
CutePDF Writer depends on a PostScript-to-PDF converter. The publisher recommends Ghostscript, but the writer package no longer bundles it. Install the converter as a separate prerequisite. If the printer appears but never creates a PDF, confirm that the converter installation completed before changing document settings.
This split matters when preparing another computer. Copying the CutePDF Writer installer alone does not reproduce a working setup. The publisher also states that the virtual printer cannot be shared or mapped as a network printer. Each workstation needs its own local installation and converter.
Name and protect
After processing the print job, CutePDF Writer asks for a destination and filename. The options can set PDF document properties and apply password security. The security settings support 256-bit AES encryption. Decide whether a recipient needs permission to open, print, or copy before distributing the file, because losing an opening password can make the saved document inaccessible.
A protected PDF still contains the page image generated by the printing application. CutePDF Writer does not repair a missing heading, clipped table, or incorrect page break. Check the source application’s print preview first, then open the saved PDF and inspect the final pages.
Control the output
The conversion settings influence file size and output quality. The official FAQ describes PDFWrite settings for screen, printer, prepress, and default output. A smaller setting can reduce storage and transfer time, while print-oriented output preserves more detail. Make the choice according to the document rather than assuming the smallest file is equivalent.
Fonts need particular attention. If the resulting PDF has missing or incorrect characters, the publisher directs users to the CutePDF Writer printer properties and the TrueType Fonts setting. Selecting Download as Softfont embeds the font information differently from Substitute with Device Fonts. Reprint the document after that change and verify the affected characters.
Keep the boundary clear
CutePDF Writer turns printable pages into a PDF. It does not rearrange PDF pages, edit text already stored in a PDF, fill forms, or combine unrelated PDF files through an editing workspace. Those jobs belong to a PDF editor. Its strength is the printer path: if the originating program can render the material for printing, the virtual printer can usually capture that rendered result as a separate PDF.
