Overview

Dota 2 is Valve’s free-to-play team strategy game for Windows, macOS and Linux. Two teams of five players control individual heroes and fight to destroy the opposing Ancient. All heroes belong to the free game, while cosmetics and the optional Dota Plus subscription provide additional purchases.

Breaking the enemy base

Each team protects an Ancient inside its base. Towers guard the approaches, and the battlefield connects the bases through top, middle and bottom lanes. Players fight enemy heroes and smaller units while advancing toward those defenses. Destroying the Ancient ends the match.

Dota combines direct hero control with team decisions about lanes, attacks and defense. Players issue movement and attack commands, activate abilities and coordinate through chat or map pings. The ping wheel supplies messages for actions such as attacking, retreating or placing wards.

Heroes develop during each match

Heroes have different abilities and can serve several roles. Players gain levels during a match and choose ability upgrades or talents as those options become available. Active abilities can require mana and impose cooldowns before the player can use them again.

Axe’s Berserker’s Call forces nearby enemies to attack him while granting him bonus armor. Hero demo mode lets players try a hero’s abilities outside matchmaking. The hero browser also filters choices by roles, including carry and support.

Equipment and vision

Players earn gold through combat and the destruction of enemy structures, then spend it in the shop. Equipment recipes combine components into other items. Some equipment supplies active commands: Blink Dagger teleports its owner toward a target point. Damage from an enemy hero or Roshan temporarily prevents that activation.

Observer Wards provide another kind of control. A player plants a ward at a chosen location, and it grants ground vision to the team for a limited period. Team members can combine that information with map pings to communicate where they want to act.

Match rules

Players can queue alone or form a party. Dota’s matchmaking considers skill and behavior, while ranked play tracks competitive placement.

  • Turbo increases gold and experience gains, shortens respawns and weakens defensive towers compared with ordinary All Pick.
  • Ability Draft lets players take turns choosing abilities from a shared pool to construct their hero’s skill set.
  • Cooperative bot matches let a group play against computer opponents.

Practice before matchmaking

Dota 2 provides scripted tutorial objectives for mechanics such as teleporting, wards and team fights. Its glossary explains heroes, items, towers, creeps and other game concepts. Players can complete lessons separately from a full match.

Hero guides recommend item purchases and ability upgrades during play. The simplified shop for new players reveals further equipment choices as they complete its suggested purchases. Players can switch to the normal shop when they want the full selection.

Community game rules

The Arcade contains community games with their own maps and rules. Players browse a game’s hub, look for open lobbies or create a lobby themselves. Public and private lobbies control who can join, and parties can enter custom games together.

Watching and match analysis

The Watch area provides live games and match replays. Spectators can inspect player statistics and graphs of gold or experience to follow the teams’ economic progress.

After a match, Dota separates damage and healing contributions by abilities and items. Its breakdowns also show damage mitigation, allied contributions and dispels. Players can filter these details by game time to inspect a particular phase rather than only the final totals.

Dota Plus

The optional subscription adds an Assistant that suggests heroes, items and ability upgrades using recent match data. Item recommendations account for lane choices, hero lineups and existing purchases. Players can request a recalculation after changing their inventory.

Plus also supplies hero challenges and statistical relics. Players choose a challenge before the match, then earn its progression reward through a qualifying victory. Relics track specific achievements and show progress after the game. Separate hero levels unlock progression rewards such as chat wheel responses.
